Yueyin,
Thanks a lot for the info.
I’ve heard about this event on WeChat from one of my old buddies. We’ve been independently poring over some photos taken of some of our classmates. As you can imagine, after nearly half a century, identifying some of them is almost a chore in itself.

I don't care about reputation or resume, I Just Want The Money!"
结果他还是让我译了。

Steve,

| | | QHE United States Local time: 22:47 English to Chinese + ... TOPIC STARTER

QHE,
Thanks for making my lines look more "official" with these photographs!
| | | QHE United States Local time: 22:47 English to Chinese + ... TOPIC STARTER

David,
现如今,国内市场真是很丰富。新鲜老菱角、莲藕、荸荠、芋头、红薯、 紫薯、山药豆、 板栗… 我都吃到了(外加你在《忆家乡八月十八潮》中提及的各种佳肴 )! 最有意思的是剥菱壳还需要一定的技巧。

QHE,
Thanks for sharing this interesting piece of news. Let's get to work.
My Response to the New Slogans with Renewed Hopes for a Renaissance of the Chinese State and Culture
As a Chinese by birth, I send my best wishes for the occassion.
As a translator, I am curious about the rendering of the new slogans, because they are outlines of stately policies that will be put in place for a long time, at least before the next one.
A brief look tells me that most of these sentences are rendered well, thought a little bit closer to spoken English rather than to its written style.
Some of these translations need better rendering. Some are even grammatically poor.
e.g. One of the new slogans that has room for improvement:
⑨大道之行,天下为公 (which has been translated into:)
We should pursue a just cause for common good.
Comment:
Well, first, there should be a "the" before "common good."
"For the common good" sounds good if not better.
Second, this is such a well known saying in the Chinese classics that great translations already exist, by great Western scholars, at least a century ago. There is no need to re-invent the wheel. But if we are looking for something new in everything, we need to polish a little bit, even things old look better when polished.
Third, this translation reveals a fact that the Chinese original is not completely understood by the translator, whoever he or she is. For a "foreign language expert, or a native English speaker, English should be no problem for him or her. The problem is how to interpret the Chinese phrase, in this example, two parts. Where does this "We" come from in "We should pursue", and if there is a we, who are You? 这样用词的本身就把人们分开来了。 There should be no separation among the people, be it ruler or the ruled. There is no we or you, him or her when referring to the society as a whole. Let's take the phrase apart and squeeze every word/character so we can get most out of them.
1_大道之行
2_天下为公
大道= the grand purpose, the ultimate state of a country, an ideal society as envisioned by Confucius or lately by Sun Yat-sen. A society in which the strong and the capable contribute, the little ones and the very old are taken care of.
之行= to put in practice, or already in place, working or functioning well; or a condition required before something can work properly.
3_天下= the society, the country, the world, humanity or "all under Heaven" as the ancient Chinese call it.
4_为公= 公 the public, everyone included, the 为 is tricky here, because it could be interpreted as a verb (belongs to) or proposition (for somebody) or a state of being (becomes...).
Now let's put them back step by step, and see the relationship between the two parts:
1_大道之行 an ideal society at work/ functioning well (If...)
(The right condition needed for something good to happen)
2_天下为公 the world belongs to everyone, the public gets to share whatever we all have. (The result from that condition)
So, once you understand what each of the elements carry with them, you are in a better position to put them into a good sentence in the target language, with little or no loss of meaning, or probably better, with every ounce of the original still dripping in its multiplicity of connotations, a feature in classic Chinese.
Once understood, there is more than one way to express it. Let's say there is more than one way to cook a fish. Here are a couple of the possible dishes that I can come up with from the same fish, right on top of my head at this point:
_________大道之行,天下为公________
Version A:
When a great system is in function, the world is shared by everyone.
|
Version B:
When everyone has a stake, we know we have reached a great state of the State.
|
Version C:
The ultimate is achieved when everyone of us is taken care of.
|
Version D:
A Grand Society is one that leaves no one behind in its progress.
That's my shot, expecting more and better ones to come. I am sure we have ones here that will beat the hell out of mine. | | | wherestip United States Local time: 21:47 Chinese to English + ... Lack of literary flair | Oct 28, 2017 |
David,
I agree with your assessment. The English translations serve the purpose of conveying the main thrusts of the slogans. But to be quotable, perhaps more thought could be put into the effort. | | | David Shen United States Local time: 19:47 English to Chinese + ... Where Have You Been? | Oct 28, 2017 |

Steve,
I was wondering where you have been for the last three weeks. California's wild fire is put out now, if they'd used right thing, I mean water not wine; but Taxes should be out of water by now.
Sorry to joke on disasters, but don't you think all these slogans, meant to be concise versions of new policies could be polished a little bit more? Especially if they are meant to be projected beyond the borders of our Motherland?
Anyway, it is a tough call to find any close equivalent in English, especially the numeric ones. That's why I was having fun with PK on the other thread, I don't mean or want to talk about politics, as we are translators, not commentators, but ......
