MARC AGRONIN: What’s one practical New Year’s resolution soon-to-be-retirees should make?
Increase your daily physical activity.
The physical health benefits are obvious, but my suggestion speaks more to the benefits for your brain.
First, exercise helps to control blood pressure, obesity, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, all of which are risk factors for neurocognitive disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease.
Second, exercise appears to increase the release of a key protein called brain-derived neurotrophic growth factor or BDNF, which promotes the growth of brain cells and their connections with each other. This BDNF boost is supported by neuroscientific research showing that the brain is capable of growth and development regardless of age. These findings might account for why older individuals who keep physically fit are better able to process and lay down new memories.
Putting this all together, geriatric psychiatrist Dr. Gary Small contends in his book “The Alzheimer’s Prevention Program” that a physically active lifestyle combined with a healthy diet (i.e., lots of fruits and vegetables) can potentially stave off impending Alzheimer’s disease by up to four years. Given the fact that most people develop symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease in their 80s, an additional four years is a big difference.
The dilemma many aging individuals face is setting up a sufficient regimen of physical activity. The good news is that you don’t have to become a marathon runner to get the needed benefits. One study found that individuals who walked the equivalent of about 6 miles per week had a 50% reduced risk of Alzheimer’s disease. The physical exercise does not even have to involve walking, but some equivalent activity. Consider that the lifestyles of aging individuals in many of the “Blue Zones” of exceptional longevity involve lots of daily physical movement but not exercise in the traditional sense. Getting up and down to tend to a garden or take care of a grandchild and walking to the market and back becomes equivalent to the squats and laps that many people do at the gym.
Ultimately, too many people heading into their retirement years with great fears of memory loss end up seeking a quick fix through some unproven and expensive brain tonic or formula.
A more effective, cheaper and satisfying route is simply to get moving doing something you enjoy–and then keep doing it.

Yes, you name it but eating apple is not something moving enough perhaps except shopping for apples (walking a little) and searching for jokes (sitting down).
Certainly anyone can think of something that can make you move and do "something you enjoy - and then keep doing it."
For me it is a laugh every three hours, brisk walking 3 miles per week and having 葡国咖喱鸡饭 every two weeks.
What about you (who's reading this post)?
