I am staying temporarily at an apartment where I have stayed 6 months before, and during those 6 months I had no problems at all with this same Wi-Fi connection. I am staying temporarily at an apartment where I have stayed 6 months before, and during those 6 months I had no problems at all with this same Wi-Fi connection. The router is located in another apartment. I have two other, old, computers - one is a HP and the other is a Dell. On these two other, old, computers the Wi-Fi connection always works fine, there is never any disruption. But on my newer gaming laptop, an Acer Nitro 5, the Wi-Fi connection issues started when I moved back to this same apartment a few months ago. It is in a basement.

First of all, can it have anything to do with whether 4G or 5G is used? Because at a community forum for Acer Aspire, it was reported that there was something with the channel number used on the router being too low (or too high, I cannot recall exactly now). But here in Finland, it seems 5G has been available since many years.

I also received some notification last time I couldn't connect that "This site can't be reached".

But last time I couldn't connect to Wi-Fi, I didn't do anything for about 4-5 hours and then suddenly the Wi-Fi connection was back again. However, that time at least I could view the different available Wi-Fi connections but today there is absolutely empty where the list used to be once I have clicked on the Wi-Fi connection icon (Network & Internet settings).

On earlier occasions, I have tried restarting the computer but that did not work.

When I open Network connections under Control panel/Network and internet, I have these statuses displayed:

Bluetooth Network Connection, Not connected, Bluetooth Device (Personal Area Network)
Ethernet, Network cable unplugged, Killer E2600 Gigabit Ethernet Controller
Ethernet 2, Unidentified network, TAP-Windows Adapter V9
Local Area Connection, Network cable unplugged, TAP-Windows Adapter V9 for OpenVPN Connect
OpenVPN Connect DCO Adapter, Network cable unplugged, OpenVPN Data Channel Offload
Wi-Fi, Disabled, Killer(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX1650i 160MHz Wireless Network Adapter (201NGW)

If I right-click on above icons, I get these options (for each respective icon above, in the same order as above):

View Bluetooth Network Devices; Disable; Status; Create shortcut; Rename; Properties
Disable; Status; Diagnose; Bridge connections; Create shortcut; Delete; Rename; Properties
Disable; Status; Diagnose; Bridge Connections; Create shortcut; Delete; Rename; Properties
Disable; Status; Diagnose; Bridge connections; Create shortcut; Delete; Rename; Properties
Disable; Status; Diagnose; Bridge connections; Create shortcut; Delete; Rename; Properties
Enable; Status; Diagnose; Create shortcut; Delete; Rename; Properties

I also have an old note about this issue, it might be that I tried this earlier and it worked but I do not remember:

1) ipconfig-flushdns
2) Network and internet, click Network reset

Earlier (several weeks ago, or over a month) when I had this issue with disconnected Wi-Fi, I also did a Google search for media disconnected ipconfig. For instance, some possible solutions turned up on this website:

https://www.minitool.com/news/media-disconnected-windows-10.html

Any of these methods that might work? Before I start changing any settings, I want to be sure that I don't make anything worse than it is already. I still haven't changed any setting, and since it has several hours since I woke up and discovered that I have no internet, I have some hope that the problem will fix it iself like last time when I waited several hours and suddenly the Wi-Fi connection was back again.

I also found this thread on a Microsoft forum about the same issues as I am having now:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/cant-connect-to-wifi-ipconfig-media-disconnected/1d325d0a-5394-45d3-9225-829353dcca9e

"Network seems to be stuck in “connecting” limbo but doesn’t actually connect."

That happened on earlier occasions when the network was visible in the list, that it never could connect.

As for this suggestion in above thread on the forum

"Go to Network and Internet"
"Click the Network Reset button"

I have no such Network reset button under Network and Internet.

I found these suggestions to a solution also, but they are for an Acer Aspire laptop whereas mine laptop is an Acer Nitro 5:

Network difficulties

You do not have direct physical access to the router, I take it?
If you can, plug the laptop into the back of the router using a network cable, and see if that works.
If it does work, you know is a problem with Wi-Fi, rather than the underlying network.
Alternatively, perhaps buy a Wi-Fi dongle (cheap) locally and see if that makes any difference.

In both cases above we are trying to circumvent the Wi-Fi device in the laptop that may be causing the problem.
Probably not much help, but just a suggestion.

I can't plug the laptop into the back of the router because I don't have access to the router Nov 4

Thanks for the suggestion Dan, but I can't plug the laptop into the back of the router because I don't have access to the router. For various reasons that I don't want to bring up here, I cannot get access either to the router.

Got it solved now! Nov 4

I troubleshooted each of the network adapters, and then Windows fixed the issue by enabling the Wi-Fi adapter that for some reason had been disabled. And now I have access to internet again.

I changed power and sleep settings now so that the laptop never goes to sleep as it seems this problem occurs after the laptop has been woken up from sleep mode (I often keep the laptop powered on 24/7).

Intel Killer products Nov 4

I had a desktop PC with the Intel Killer performance suite. It was a major PITA; judging by comments on various supports sites at the time, I wasn't alone. The Dell support person I spoke with suggested deleting the device and related software in the Device Manager and letting Windows reset the device, which generally worked – for a while. It became so onerous that I bought an external USB wireless adapter, which posed compatibility problems of its own, and I eventually replaced the computer. ... See more

Dell killed off the Killer performance suite; my current Dell has a Realtek device.Collapse

Cellular hotspots are a life saver too Nov 4

I know this is already resolved, but maybe this would be helpful for others who have experienced the horror of not being able to connect to wifi 😂

For those with cellphones…I’ve on more than one occasion had to use my phone’s hotspot option to connect to the internet and do work. It’s been very helpful and I don’t think many remember they have this option on their phones. ☺️

And another option Nov 4

It's also often useful to plug in your phone with a normal USB cable and do "tethering" - i.e. use the internet access of your phone. In my experience that is even more stable than using the phone as a hotspot.
