I wouldn’t exaggerate to the point of saying that it is a thing of a beauty. I need order in my work space to be productive: no messy desk, no dirty keyboard or computer screen… | | | Thayenga Germany Local time: 19:44 Member (2009) English to German + ...
It is arranged in such a way that I have easy access to everything I need. The background picture of the Grand Canyon makes it both beautiful and spiritual. In short, a place where one can feel right at home.

Neat folders and subfolders containing everything I might need, carefully placed. That is how I do my job very quickly.
My bookmarks folder, though... Might need some deep spring cleaning. Although I think keeping a tidy workplace improves working significantly.

Desktop on my computer monitor or the wooden desktop my computer sits on? | May 23, 2020 |
The former one is abso-bloody-lutely empty, except for the recycle bin that is there by default. Most programs I work with are maximised to full screen, so I hardly ever see the desktop and feel no need to store anything there. To look at my files, I can either use Total Commander, or press Win-E to bring up an Explorer window.
The latter one is full of papers, hand tools, electronic devices and various junk. | | | Liviu-Lee Roth United States Local time: 13:44 Romanian to English + ... Organized mess | May 23, 2020 |
On my desk:
- Three laptops - one for the source text, the second for the translation/review and the third for Skype, FB, chats on forums, etc.
- A legal notepad and a dozen of pens & pencils for telephonic interpreting
- Headphones for telephonic interpreting
- a calendar
- a list of # and codes to identify myself for remote interpreting
- iPhone chargers
- a nail file and nail clippers, useful during telephonic interp.
- one printer/scanne... See more On my desk:

- one printer/scanner
- a huge list of all my accounts online with usernames and passwords (over 40 on the list)
- a list of all the monthly payments (just to remind me to keep focused)
- a flash-drive with translated US legislation
In my desk drawers:
- necessary tools for a quick fix of electrical, plumbing issues
- medication, just in case
- printer cartridges, business cards from people I work with or whom I need, stamps
- shoe polish !!!!
Bookcase with dictionaries behind me (to impress the judges when I interpret on Bluejeans or Zoom platforms)
I love my mess, my wife hates it!
PS. Sorry, now I realized that it is about the desktop, not the desk. Hmmm! weekend blues!

I had it too - my daughter and I on the South Rim. Now, I have Matterhorn from my last trip there.

I don't like a mess on my desk. I try to remove everything I'm not using constantly from it, regularly (nothing like 5S, though).
On the other hand, I don't remember it ever being and example of organization.
It's half way between a mess and organization. Passable it is.

Minimalist, clutter-free | May 24, 2020 |
Just a wallpaper and a simple status bar. No desktop icons. But everything is a fingertip away.

My computer has a desktop, my computer is a desktop, and my computer is on a desktop. | | | Kay Denney France Local time: 19:44 French to English
My computer desktop:
neutral-ish background that's mostly blue, and icons for everything I ever need to click on: a folder for each client plus admin and any other business.
My real desk:
I have a tiny desk with just enough room for the computer, mouse pad, mug and a few papers and pens. I wanted a tiny desk to avoid cluttering it up, so the clutter is on the shelf next it instead! | | | Tom in London United Kingdom Local time: 18:44 Member (2008) Italian to English How I would describe it | May 25, 2020 |

Same setting here, only mine is triangular:-). It sits in the corner and the left side is against the balcony door exposing the most beautiful lake view. I don't want any folders, stackable shelves, printers etc obstructing it. The only additions are a lamp with a very small footprint, a compact modem and a VOIP phone cradle on the right, and some free space on the left for one of the cats. First come - first occupied, it's the law of the land, no fighting. They don't ruin the view:-) but strong... See more Same setting here, only mine is triangular:-). No extra paper cluttering whatsoever. ▲ Collapse | | | IrinaN United States Local time: 12:44 English to Russian + ...
Of course no judgement, your office is nobody's business but your chair... It's a capital crime against your back and overall health!
When I started translating from home almost 30 years ago, still fairly young and poor as a church mouse (or nearly every fresh Russian immigrant in the early 90s), a pair of blue jeans, a few 5-dollar T-shirts. 10-dollar blouses and 20-dollar pairs of shoes comprised most of my wardrobe but I took ~$250 from my second half-decent paycheck to spend on ... When I started translating from home almost 30 years ago, still fairly young and poor as a church mouse (or nearly every fresh Russian immigrant in the early 90s), a pair of blue jeans, a few 5-dollar T-shirts. 10-dollar blouses and 20-dollar pairs of shoes comprised most of my wardrobe but I took ~$250 from my second half-decent paycheck to spend on my first ergonomic, well-cushioned, adjustable office chair. Mind it, that was the price in the 90s. It strained my budget heavily at the time but I guess I should be grateful to this day.
I'm sorry if I poked my nose where it does not belong. ▲ Collapse | | | To report site rules violations or get help, contact a site moderator: You can also contact site staff by submitting a support request » Poll: How would you describe your current desktop?
