I consider translation as a business, and I prefer to specialize than to devirsify now. Perhaps that's because my return on investment in this activity is still growing. When it begins to fall, I'll consider either making some changes, or turning to other activities. It depends.

I don’t live from my translation income. I have a pension from the 30 years I worked in-house (an EU institution). I only started freelancing when I retired. I don't know anyone else my age that isn't retired, but I have no intention of stopping…

Linguistic services are only one of my three financial "legs". Even more so because I am providing them only a few hours per week since my retirement. Unless, of course, a larger and interesting project comes up.

The other 20% comes from a survivor's pension.

I work full time as a translator and could make ends meet even if I cut my working hours by 30%.

100% since June 2013. It could actually have happened a lot earlier than 2013 if I had trusted the profession instead of investing in other illusional jobs in-house. But better late than never.

What is "necessary income? Isn't it all necessary?

So my answer to this latest dumb question is: all of it.
