Depends on the organization Aug 8

This really depends on the organization, but mostly it's a combination of all those options. I'm a member of the ATA solely for their freelance register, I'm a SATI member strictly to show to clients that I "belong" to an association that is associated with my language combination, I belong to SENSE and the NGTV mostly for the social interaction (i.e. networking), I'm a member of PEG because of their fantastic help forum, etc.

Don't know Aug 8

I wouldn't know, because I'm not a member of any of those organizations. I consider those memberships as possibly useful, but definitely unnecessary.

I seem to belong to an amateur body Aug 8

Presumably a professional body wouldn't come with as many aches and pains as mine.

Good conferences and training days, a few job opportunities Aug 8

I can recommend the Chartered Institute of Linguists´ conferences and still look at their library of webinars that are fee to members. There are even more, if you pay for them.

The Danish Association of Certified Translators and Interpreters ran some good training days, also open to non-members, and probably still does. The Danish Association of Certified Translators and Interpreters ran some good training days, also open to non-members, and probably still does. I found them very useful, both for the formal content and for networking with colleagues. Back in the day I was not eligible to join, as I was not State Authorized, but the Danish government in its folly has abolished State Authorization, and now I am semi retired, so I have never been a member. But there are certainly other benefits.

The Danish Union of Communication and Language (K&S) ran some good training sessions - it is far more than a Trade Union, and they once supported a Pow-Wow by providing meeting facilities and practical help.

I believe members of the ITI are very happy with it, although I did not join. I had enough in the CIoL and K&S - they do cost money!

Some good jobs have come from the CIoL site and from networking at training days.

I like the CIoL Transnet chat group, where I have joined in discussions, asked professional questions and benefited from moral support, and there is also a Wine Bar for topics that are not directly work-related, but fun - or can be ignored.

Other professional bodies will do things differently, and you have to participate actively to get anything out of them, but I think they are well worth the subscription.
