That's a real stroke of genius! Oct 29

So, now we shouldn’t even teach kids how to speak either, as they have computers?

It's not as unimaginable as we would like to be
4th graders in the US are given tablets and parents are notified that kids will no longer be required to do any handwriting...

Making kids utterly unable to function without gadgets which can't work if not connected to the Web - in effect tethering kids to the Web - is supposed to be "progress"? What could possibly go wrong?

"Why bother learning another language" looks innocuous in comparison.

The point is.... Nov 1

Like travel, language learning broadens the mind.

I have been forgetting to look it up all week - I only remember just after I have closed down the computer.

The question here is a legitimate one so it's a pity that some of the answers are so defensive. My view is there is certainly still merit in learning a foreign language for its own sake BUT not for career/work reasons, and certainly not in order to become a translator, because our goose is cooked, I'm afraid.

Nobody knows how things might change, so learning a language is ALWAYS a good thing, EVEN for career/work reasons.
Learning a language might be very helpful for a career/work because it involves using the brain, forcing a new point of view, and thinking outside the box.

AI is a tool infested with biases and errors that can’t replace the way human intelligence works. So, the pity here isn’t any of the answers or the defensive prejudice intended, but to be pessimistic and give up.

As I said previously, it seems that AI is the perfect companion for laziness.
