Source text - French ANGKOR, “LA CITE SUR LE GANGE”
Capitale du royaume khmer presque sans discontinuer du IXe au XVe siècle, Angkor est sans doute aujourd’hui le plus vaste ensemble archéologique du monde. Brunos Dagens nous fait découvrir le site et ses édifices majeurs, temples-montagnes ou bassins-reservoirs.
Les Khmers d’autrefois, entremêlant les cosmogonies indiennes à leur imaginaire propre et les introduisant dans leurs paysages familiers, ont su, sous une apparente littéralité, renouveler les vieux mythes indiens et, mieux encore, les traduire dans de somptueuses compositions a l’échelle d’un temple, d’une ville, parfois même d’une région. Angkor, la plus célèbre de leurs capitales, est à différents niveaux l’expression la plus achevée d’un tel art. Bâtie pourrait-on dire entre ciel et mer, en plein coeur d’une riche plaine agraire, elle est traversée par le principal cours d’eau permanent de la région. Ce dernier, connu actuellement comme la rivière de Siem Reap, mais que des inscriptions anciennes assimilent au Gange, prend sa source à une quarantaine de kilomètres au nord de la ville, sur ce que l’on appelle de nos jours le “Mont des arbres à litchis” (Phnom Kulen), mais qui était autrefois la “Montagne de Madhendra” (c’est-à-dire Çiva). C’est sur ce lieu éminent que, en 802 de notre ère, le roi Jayavarman II a par un rite magique refonde la monarchie khmère. Avant de le quitter, la rivière ou le Gange comme on veut, court sur des représentations symboliques de Çiva, des Linga sculptées sur le fond de son lit rocheux. Une fois sanctifiée par ce contact avec le dieu, elle dévale la pente abrupte pour irriguer la plaine, grenier à riz de la capitale. Ayant atteint Angkor, c’est soigneusement canalisée qu’elle la parcourt. Au-delà, après quelques kilomètres dans la campagne, elle se jette dans le “Grand Lac” (Tonlé Sap), ce véritable océan intérieur autour duquel s’est, depuis toujours, bâti le Cambodge.

Translation - English ANGKOR, THE CITY ON THE GANGE
As the Khmer kingdom capital without almost any interruption from the 9th to the 15th century, Angkor is probably today the world’s widest archaeological unit. Brunos Dagens introduces us the site and its major buildings, mountains-temples or tanks-basins.
The old-time Khmers, mixing the Indian cosmogony to their own imaginary world and introducing them in their familiar landscapes, knew, under an obvious literality, how to renew the ancient Indians myths and even better, translate them in sumptuous compositions to the scale of a temple, a town, even sometimes a region. Angkor, the most famous of their capitals, is to different levels the most achieved expression of such an art. Built, we could say in-between sky and sea, in the heart of a rich agrarian plain it is crossed by the main and permanent river of the region. This one, actually known as the river Siem Reap, but that ancient inscriptions assimilate to the Gange river, takes its source about 40 kilometres away up north of the city, on what we call nowadays the “The Litchi Trees Mount” (Phnom Kulen), but which was formerly the “Madhendra Mountain” (in other words: Siva). It is on this out standing site, in 802 of our era that King Jayavarman II, thanks to a magical ritual, recreated the Khmer monarchy. Before leaving it, the river or the Gange, as we prefer, runs on symbolical representations of Siva, sculpted Linga on the bottom of its rocky bed. Once sanctified by this contact with the god, it rushes down the abrupt slope in order to irrigate the plain: the rice attic of the capital. Once it has reached Angkor, it is delicately canalised, that it traverses it. Beyond, after a few kilometres in the country, it throws itself in the “Great Lake” (Tonlé Sap), this true inner ocean around which Cambodia always built itself.
