Bio
Formerly a professional translator with 38 years' experience in UK government service, I am now a freelance translator offering translation of Arabic, French, Spanish and Italian into English. I am also available for proofreading and editing work. During my government service I worked on a very wide range of topics, but specialised mostly over the past 30 years in Middle Eastern politics, international relations and defence matters. Following my first BA Hons degree in French and Spanish, I studied and gained internal qualifications in Italian and Arabic equivalent to ILR3 and ILR4 respectively, and am a Member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists. From 1986 onwards I was in the role of senior linguist, responsible for training less experienced linguists and proofreading and editing their work. I am accustomed to working accurately, in strict confidence and to tight deadlines.
Since becoming a freelancer in March 2016 I have worked on a wide range of translation projects in my various language pairs for numerous clients, including Index On Censorship, Save The Children and Amazon. I have also co-translated a novel from Arabic, "Trees for the Absentees" by Ahlam Bsharat (Neem Tree Press) and an award-winning children's book, "The Mysterious Well" by Imene Mebarki (Amazon).
I also work with refugees and asylum-seekers as a community interpreter, both in Arabic and French.
