They say a visit to Paris is not complete without a trip to the Eiffel Tower, London not experienced entirely unless you have been on the Eye and New York incomplete without a hike up to the floor of the Empire State Building. However, I beg to disagree. I have been to all the aforementioned cities, even lived in a couple and never visited the iconic edifices in question, and think I have a fairly rounded idea of them. There would of course be one exception to my rule- the Acropolis and Athens. Although it towers above you from any part of the city, unless you have physically visited the site of the Parthenon, you have not truly visited Athens.
These were my thoughts last time I went to Athens several years ago, and they still ring true today for a number of reasons. The sheer magnitude and craftsmanship of the greatest archaeological site in the world are breathtaking. Literally translation as the ‘upper cit’ where inhabitants would go as a place of refuge in times of invasion, all the photos in the world cannot prepare you for the immensity of the Parthenon. Built in the fifth century it took 15 years to finish the temple, which then became a church, a mosque and finally a storage facility for Turkish gunpowder, with ultimately proved its downfall.
Though destroyed by bombardment during years of warfare, it remains a tribute to the glorious past and the achievement of the ancient Athenians. Perhaps more impressively it remains a symbol of modern Athens, thanks to tireless restoration projects, and still affords the greatest view of the city stretched out below. A city, known for its faults as much as its assets, which has undergone something of its own restoration as a result of hosting the 2004 Olympics.
The games were a success, of that there is no denting, but they have also helped to culturally invigorate the city.
There was much speculation as to whether Athens would be ready for the games last summer, but the Greeks proved the world wrong with one of the most memorable events in recent history. But at what cost?

كانت هذه اعتقاداتي منذ سبعة سنوات٬ ولأسباب عدة لايزال اليوم فيها صوت يوحي بأنها صحيحة. ان مهارة صانعي هذا المبنى وضخامته الذي يعتبر من أعظم المواقع الأثرية في العالم مثير للدهشة٬ والترجمة الحقيقية للعبارة "أعلى المواطن" تعني المكان الذي كان يتخذه سكان أثينا كملجأ لهم خلال الحرب. وحتى ولو شاهدت كل الصور المعروضة في العالم للبارثنون فانك لن تتوقع ضخامة هذا الموقع.لقد بني هذا المعبد في القرن الخامس ودام انجازه خمسة عشرة سنة٬ ثم حول الى كنيسة٬ وأصبح بعد ذلك مسجد وأخيرا استعمله
الأتراك كمخزن للبارود٬ وهذا ما أدى به الى السقوط في النهاية.
وعلى الرغم من أنه دمر بسبب القصف خلال الحرب٬ فانه ظل رمز تقدير للتاريخ المجيد والانتصارات التي أحرز عليها الاثينيون الاولون. ومن الرائع أنه لعل الموقع بقي رمزا لأثينا الحديثة٬ ويعود الفضل الى مشاريع الترميم التي تم انجازها بلا توقف. وما يزال يعطي أعظم المشاهد التي تطل على المدينة الواسعة. هذه المدينة المشهورة بنقائصها وكذلك ممتلكاتها٬ والتي خضعت لعملية الترميم نتيجة لاستضافتها للألعاب الأولمبية 2004.

نحن نعيش عصراً تتحدد فيه أهمية الأمم بقدر ما تنجزه في مجال العلوم وتطبيقاتها التقنية, ولكي نجد مكاناًتحت شمس هذا العصر لابد أن تتوجه خطوتنا الأولى - بجدية وتخطيط علمي - نحو ترجمة العلوم.
تتعاظم أهمية الترجمة العلمية يوما بعد يوم نتيجة للانفجار المعرفي, والتقدم التكنولوجي الهائل في جميع مجالات الحياة, وتزداد هذه الأهمية بالنسبة لعالمنا العربي لكونه - أساسا - متلقيا للمعرفة العلمية أكثر منه منتجا لها, وهو الوضع الذي يتناقض جوهريا مع النقص الشديد الذي نعاني منه في مجال الترجمة, بصفة عامة, وفي مجال الترجمة العلمية بصفة خاصة, ويكفي أن نشير هنا إلى ما ورد في تقرير التنمية الإنسانية العربي لعام 2000 من أن إجمالي ما تم ترجمته منذ إنشاء دار الحكمة في عهد المأمون حتى الآن يقدر بعشرة آلاف كتاب, وهو ما يوازي ما تترجمه إسبانيا - مثلا - حاليا في عام واحد.
ولاشك أن قصور الترجمة العلمية في عالمنا العربي يعد من الأسباب الرئيسية وراء تعثر جهود تعريب التعليم الجامعي, ويشي بوضوح إلى مدى تفشي داء اللاعلمية الخبيث في مجتمعاتنا العربية. لقد أحدث هذا القصور فراغا كبيرا في نسيج الثقافة العربية وبالتالي في تكوين العقل العربي, والذي بات في حاجة ماسة إلى تجديد منطلقاته الفكرية وعدته المعرفية تلبية لمطالب اللحاق بركب مجتمع المعرفة المنطلق الذي بات شعاره (اللحاق أو الانسحاق), ومن أهم هذه المطالب إكساب الفرد القدرة على التعلم ذاتيا مدى الحياة, وهو أمر لا يمكن تحقيقه دون زاد متجدد ومنوع من حصاد المعرفة العلمية والتكنولوجية.

We live in an epoch where the importance of nations is defined by what is achieved in the field of science as well as its technical adaptation. In order to fit in our times, it is necessary to direct our first steps earnestly and under scientific planning towards the translation of sciences.
The importance of scientific translation increases day after day owing to the knowledge boom and the huge technological advances achieved in every field of life. As for our Arab world, this importance is increasing mainly for it is regarded as being more a consumer of scientific knowledge than a producer. Such a situation is substantially contradictory due to the serious shortage experienced in the field of translation in particular. It will be sufficient to point out, in this context, the report of human development in the Arab world in year 2000. where it is stated that the amount of translation since the establishment of Dar Al-Hikma. During the Maamoun period up to the present time. Is estimated at 10 000 books which is equivalent for instance to the translation performed currently in Spain in one year time.
There is no doubt that the lack of scientific translation in our Arab world is considered as the main cause that lay behind the failure of the Arabism efforts of the university study. It shows clearly the extent of damages incurred by the malicious evil of the absence of science in our Arab societies. This shortage has caused a huge gap in the Arabic cultural web and accordingly in developing the Arab mentality. This remains a pressing need to renew its correct reasoning and the tools of its knowledge to join the scientific society of which the slogan “catch up or crush” the most important demand are to get the individuals to acquire the capacity to ensure their self education in life. This fact cannot be achieved in the absence of a diverse and renewable supply of the harvest of the scientific knowledge and technology.
