On a pessimistic note Aug 8

It's been great reading you all. It's been a couple of bad years for me as a freelance translator in the ENG-ESP pair. I can blame the economy in my home country. However, I understand that many felow translators in Argentina are doing well, despite the bigger picture. So I only have myself to blame. I'm sure now that I've dropped the ball in many aspects, particularly in terms of campaigning myself among new clients - this has been an issue in theraphy "you have to put yourself out there more" ... It's been great reading you all. It's been a couple of bad years for me as a freelance translator in the ENG-ESP pair. I can blame the economy in my home country. However, I understand that many felow translators in Argentina are doing well, despite the bigger picture. So I only have myself to blame. I'm sure now that I've dropped the ball in many aspects, particularly in terms of campaigning myself among new clients - this has been an issue in theraphy "you have to put yourself out there more" - this is not what I'm doing here, promise.
I do want to weigh in in this whole rate thing. As of lately what has happened is that I get a lot of requests for pricing, I keep in mind the lower rates derived from MT, I keep in mind the status of the client, if it is an individual or a business, I make sure to present the whole picture to the potential client like "this is my base rate but I'm in a position to offer a discount for such and such..." I don't hear from them any more. So I've tried the opposite, keeping to standard rates, converted from AR$ it would be anywhere from 4 to 7 USD cents (sorry, conversion varies depending on what kind of dollar we use, yes, that's right, we have different US dollar exchange rates), and again with no result.
So I guess my opinion on this issue is I have no idea. I managed to live on freelance translation during a solid ten-year run, but that has come to an end. What brings me to maybe the rate is not what makes it for the client, I don't know what makes it. I'm having a really difficult time getting into my client's head, clearly.
