Is it just me, or is the Rs.0.8 (0.009 USD) - Rs.1.2 (0.014 USD) per word rate being offered by many indian translation agencies simply unbelievable?

I'm finding it increasingly difficult to wrap my head around these rates. The amount of skill, expertise, and attention to detail required for accurate and culturally appropriate translations deserves far more recognition.

Fellow translators, I'd love to hear your thoughts on this. Are you facing similar challenges? How a

This is unfortunate reality Aug 9

In India 1.2 is upper side. Indian companies are proud to pay 1 as standard rate and unfortunately Translators are also happy.

RS0.8~1.2 per word rate? Aug 10

If I'm reading this correctly, they're offering you 0.8 USD to 1.2 USD per word rate?

I think this is more than what other European and American companies are offering. What seems to be your problem?

No. I am speaking of the currency in indian rupees which is Rs.0.8 (0.009 USD) - Rs.1.2 (0.014 USD).

A different world of translation Aug 10

As usual, I'm boiling it all down to the bottom line and food in the fridge.

A huge chunk of global translation market is no longer served by translators as we understand the meaning of it. Machine operators and language technicians is more like it, and they can run 20 000 - 30 000 words through the machine over the same time interval that would take a professional, highly specialized and honest translator to tackle 3000-4000. I'm sure the quality is not even required, the agency will spent another cent on MTPE (hopefully) and for as long as it all sells... Feeds the family, period.

Say, they get 0.01 cents per word. That's 200 - 300 dollars, a very substantial amount in India.

Median salary:
India’s median salary is 27,300 INR per month (325 USD).

This implies that half of the Indian population earns less than 27,300 INR every month, while the other half earns more than 27,300 INR.

Salary range
India’s average salary range extends from 8,080 INR per month (98 USD) to 143,000 INR per month (1,734 USD).

I know all too well that highly professional and knowledgeable Indian translators are still out there but sorry, guys, you are being pushed aside just like the rest of the professional translation world. Good luck holding on to your niches!

This peanut price undervalues the efforts of the translator. How do they cope up with this price?

I always refuse these offers, as everyone should, and scold the agency for being completely out of their mind offering such rates outside India.
Even agencies from richer countries are offering shockingly low rates nowadays...

What kind of solution would you like to see implemented as a result of that 'conversation'?
I personally suggest that all Indian agencies be shut down and stop their operations with immediate effect.
Call me old fashioned, but I'm more inclined to old German school of thought (final solution) when it comes to matters like this.

This is not a viable solution since they represent a major part of the market for many language pairs and not all are able to get direct contact with a client to pitch him according to his price. More so for a starter.

May be those translators who are working with them the agencies are able to suffice them with more work? Allah knows best.
