There should be an option to disable it, at least Feb 20, 2022

You know, democracy and stuff.

Live chat help desk Feb 20, 2022

Like others have said, this is likely a "live chat" help desk access point. Many sites have it. How "live" the chat is, depends on the site, but it's good that this widget tells you when the live help person will be back to help lively. Usually, there is also a way to disable it, although the ProZ.com one doesn't appear to have that ability.

FWIW, I have Adblock Plus, uBlock Origin and uBlock Origin Extra installed in my browser, but the widget still appears.

It re-appears after 12 seconds.

Try this. In my experience (with FIrefox) you don't need any others.

Refreshing the page does it in my case, and then it's gone for the whole day Feb 20, 2022

In my case, with Adblock Plus and uBlock Origin installed, it does not appear again after I refresh the page once. So, I'm ok with that.

Just noticed it Feb 20, 2022

why are people getting annoyed about such trivial thing?
I noticed the dialog bubble only after my curiosity got the best of me and I opened this thread I wasn't even aware of it before reading this.
And it re-appears for me too. Both in Chrome and Opera with uBlock, tried both options ('Block element' and 'Block element in frame').

Just seen this Feb 20, 2022

I don't usually ever go up to the menu bar but I've just seen this:

Try one of the built-in Annoyances or the HOSTS filters. I only use uBO as my blocker and the live chat button never appears unless I deliberately allowed it to load.

Real-time chat Feb 21, 2022

Yes, thank you, Tom.
And by selecting 'Real-time chat', this message appears,

Real-time communications* inbox

You have disabled real-time chat**. You can adjust your settings here***.

* Why the inconsistency there? Must be the character-limit thingy. Or the clashing repetition of 'communication'. But why not keep the 'chat' bit in both instances, I wonder.
** I never disabled this. As I've said, it disappeared once I refreshed the page, thanks to my two ad blockers.
*** When selecting the hyperlink, you land on a whole page of contact options ― phone, SMS, voice and video calls, the whole shebang, none of which I would be remotely interested in.

So, thanks, but no, thanks.

BTW, top right of the page there's also a 'Discuss in forum' link to a thread H. Dotterer started back in 2016, addressed to Plus subscribers, which faded away after a short period of time, after users complained that this new service did not work.

As a long-standing paying member, I'd rather the ProZ management did concentrate on more pressing issues, and maybe implement some of the many (many!) suggestions we had offered when that tab was active (does anybody know what happened to that?), instead of adding aesthetic gimmicks to the site, that do very little to improve a web space intended for language professionals.

(Edited to fix a grammar issue in last paragraph.)

I hadn't even noticed it Feb 21, 2022

What with all those flashing banners, pop-up boxes, bright red upgrade offers, Studio adverts, weird and/or moving avatars, paid users posting images, grumpy pedants correcting others' English and filling the page with unnecessary quote boxes... I find it hard to be irritated by a little chat icon.

Chat for feedback, yes Feb 21, 2022

Hi Tom and all,

I'm the "Mike" and the chat will likely disappear soon.

I may be able to figure out how to remove it from forums today.

It was added to more of the site prior to the weekend in order to gather some support-related feedback from site users. It has been useful to see what questions might be asked in an immediate fashion rather than the creation of a support ticket or a direct email, or asking in a forum thread.

Mike

Thanks Mike - it would be good to know in advance when Proz is about to introduce something new. This one was a complete surprise!
