I wanted to ask if any of you use AI with post editing for translation. Is it a good choice for quality and efficiency?

No, because I still have better reading comprehension and a better style than AI, at least for my particular needs. Also, the AI corpus is smaller in my target language, so AI output is worse.

Spending my time correcting AI output would be very boring (though perhaps not quite as boring as manual labour, or correcting a bad human translator's work).

Addendum: Not dissing AI really, it's early yet and it's doing impressive things.

Didn’t they feed the loads of “amtliche Dokumente der EU” yet?

No, AI is not [yet] suited for PEMT. It's better to use a dedicated MT engine, such as Google Translate.

There are different types of AI. E.g. general AI will not be interesting. ChapGPT is therefore a bad example. On the other hand, translations tools like CAT and MT have been slowly introducing AI features over the past years. So, even if you don't choose AI, you're probably using it without noticing.

dedicated vs generalist MT tools Jun 12

Google Translate is not a "dedicated" but a generalist MT engine.
Good MTPE is done using real dedicated MT engines which are trained with specific content, so the output can be of quite good quality.
As for AI for post editing, DeepL can be seen as such a tool but only for English and German (Write).

Yes, but Jun 12

Eur-Lex is unavoidable for regulatory language, obviously. But Swedish is a small language, and if you're looking for, say, contemporary financial argot* there just isn't very much material out there for AI to use, and you need to do your own reading and collating.

Also "Euroswedish" is heavily influenced by French. Traditional legal Swedish is brief, clear and a joy to read. EU legalese is very different and shouldn't be used as a model (except we often don't have a choice, and it will no doubt prevail in the end).

(* meaning trader slang, loose transaction lingo etc.)

No wonder you do, because AI has none. Understanding anything is beyond the capabilities of today's AI.

Not as an MTPE tool! Jun 13

In my experience, AI is helpful as a search tool alongside Google search and other resources. In my experience, AI is helpful as a search tool alongside Google search and other resources. I consider it just another way of finding reference materials on the web, in consideration of its different interrogation methods, different results, and different corpus. Sometimes it can also be faster, more resourceful, and more fun to discuss terminology or phrasing options with AI engines, in consideration of their amazing, though often devious, grasp of language. In any case, I never trust their results without further checking and consideration.

This is what Gemini had to say about it (as I mentioned the superiority of HT translation):

While machine translation has made significant progress, human translation still offers several advantages, such as:
Superior ability to understand context and nuance: Humans can better understand the subtleties of language, including cultural references, humor, and sarcasm, which can be challenging for machine translation.
Improved accuracy and quality: Human translators can ensure the translated text is accurate, grammatically correct, and reads naturally in the target language.
Greater creativity and flexibility: Humans can adapt their translation style to suit the specific needs of the project and target audience.
Overall, while machine translation is a valuable tool, human translation remains the preferred choice for critical or sensitive projects requiring high accuracy and nuanced understanding.
