Russian term

костельный служитель

Russian to English Social Sciences Religion
In an 1892 birth record from what is now Poland, a witness is described as a 52-year-old "костельный служитель." Of course, I could just translate it as "church servant," but really have no concept of what that might be. Any idea as to what this person's actually job entailed?

костел means Polish Roman Catholic church, so it is servant in this specific type of church

Lay servant, or clerс

к.с. - это любой священник, монах, или член данного католического прихода, у которого есть некое поручение следить за чистотой, за порядком, собирать пожертвования, звонить, и т.д. Нередко такая работа исполняется безвозмездно, как личное служение церкви и богу, а также и во искупление грехов.

church warden

I think this is the most likely meaning, although "churchwarden" as a specific title is largely restricted to the Anglican (Episcopalian) Church.
