Spanish term

Estigmas de orina pigmentada

Spanish to English Medical Medical (general) Urology
Context: Discharge report, patient bears a urostomy bag.

I have tried to find this, but millions of hits about the stigma of urinary incontinence are getting in the way.

I imagine the translation is quite literal but cannot be certain, of course.

Please help me cut through it... thanks so much!

Stigma It's true that Merriam-Webster defines stigma as (among other things) "a specific diagnostic sign of a disease", but its use in that sense is in practice confined to external marks: skin lesions. Even then it's by no means common.

Here it would be positively bizarre in English.
I would simply say abnormally coloured urine [abnormal urine color] noticed -or something of the like. "Evidence of" is how that "estigmas" should be read here -most probably, as this is quite an unusual expression no matter what.
pigmented urine stains or pigmented urine stigmas Urine can also be pigmented because of:
Dietary causes
• Beets, blackberries, and rhubarb: can give urine a reddish or pink tint.
• Carrots: Can cause urine to appear orange.
• Asparagus: May cause greenish urine and a distinctive odor.

Medications

• Antibiotics: Such as metronidazole and nitrofurantoin can cause dark urine.
• Laxatives: Containing cascara or senna may darken urine.
• Phenazopyridine: Used to relieve urinary pain can cause orange urine.
• Rifampin: Used to treat tuberculosis can turn urine red or orange.
• Amitriptyline and indomethacin: Can cause blue or green urine.

Medical Conditions

• Hematuria: Blood in the urine can cause it to appear red or brown.
• Liver disease: Such as hepatitis or cirrhosis can lead to dark brown urine due to increased bilirubin levels.
• Dehydration: Concentrated urine can appear dark yellow or amber.
• Porphyria: Disorders that can cause dark reddish or brown urine.
• Alkaptonuria: Genetic condition that can cause urine to turn black when exposed to the air
Other Causes
• Vigorous exercise: Can cause reddish urine due to muscle breakdown
• Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

Stigmas of Pigmented Urine

Given the context of a discharge report for a patient with a urostomy bag, the term "estigmas de orina pigmentada" likely refers to observable signs or indications related to the color of the urine. Here is a breakdown of the term:

Estigmas: In a medical context, "estigmas" can refer to observable signs or characteristics.
Orina pigmentada: "Pigmented urine" indicates that the urine has a noticeable color, which can be due to various reasons such as medication, diet, or underlying medical conditions.
Therefore, "stigmas of pigmented urine" seems to be an appropriate translation, capturing the essence of the original Spanish term while making sense in the context of a medical report.
Example sentence:

The patient showed signs of pigmented urine, likely due to the prescribed medication.

Upon examination, there were signs of pigmented urine in the urostomy bag, necessitating further analysis.

agree Hernan Casasbuenas : I would rephrase it a little: pigmented urine stains or pigmented urine stigmas

neutral philgoddard : 'Stigmas' is not wrong, but it's an unusual use of the word when you could just say 'signs'. Again, you should say if your answer is from ChatGPT.

agree Chema Nieto Castañón : Yes. I'd say "evidence (of)" in this case -rather than "signs (of)".
