Los protocolos de exámenes predictivos tienen como fin el ayudar a los pacientes que sufren de enfermedades hereditarias a comprender la enfermedad y tomar decisiones reproductivas informadas. Sin embargo, los protocolos predictivos pueden acarrear dilemas éticos para médicos y pacientes, afectando así el asesoramiento genético y el proceso de toma de decisiones. Este artículo describe dilemas éticos en una serie de 5 casos de exámenes predictivos para las ataxias hereditarias en Cuba. Estos casos, dan fe de las situaciones altamente controversiales que deben enfrentar las personas en riesgo y los profesionales que realizan estos estudios predictivos, mostrando así la necesidad de ampliar las normas para que abarquen estas dificultades.
Translation - English Abstract
Predictive testing protocols are intended to help patients affected with hereditary conditions understand their condition and make informed reproductive choices. However, predictive protocols may expose clinicians and patients to ethical dilemmas that interfere with genetic counseling and the decision making process. This paper describes ethical dilemmas in a series of five cases involving predictive testing for hereditary ataxias in Cuba. The examples herein present evidence of the deeply controversial situations faced by both individuals at risk and professionals in charge of these predictive studies, suggesting a need for expanded guidelines to address such complexities.

Source text - French Dans le premier de ces deux numéros consacrés à l’ethnographie des différents systèmes de médecines et d’éthiques (Vol. 26, n° 2), les auteurs présentaient des arguments en faveur d’une approche éthique qui permettrait : a. d’appréhender la complexité des valeurs intrinsèques aux différents systèmes de médecines et de soins et b. de mettre à profit leur complémentarité. Ce second volume nous entraîne cette fois à la suite des ethnologues, anthropologues et autres créatures du terrain, sur la voie de la rencontre des ethnomédecines et des ethnoéthiques. Les articles présentés portent une attention particulière aux valeurs et aux dynamiques institutionnelles, sociales et individuelles qui, en contextes de diversité culturelle, favorisent ou discréditent les ethnomédecines et les éthiques qui leur sont propres. Ils mettent l’accent sur les moyens mis en oeuvre pour contrecarrer, maintenir ou accélérer leur transformation, leur syncrétisme, leur perpétuation ou leur disparition.
Translation - English The merging of ethnomedicine and ethno-ethics.
In the first of these two issues dedicated to the ethnography of different ethical and medical systems (Vol. 26, n° 2), the authors presented arguments in favor of an ethical approach that would allow to: (a) understand the complexity of the values intrinsic to different health care and medicine systems and (b) build on their synergy.
This second volume leads us, on the track of ethnologists, anthropologists and other field creatures, to an approach that merges ethnomedicines and ethno-ethics. The articles presented pay special attention to institutional, social and individual values and dynamics which in contexts of cultural diversity favor or discredit their own ethnomedicines and ethics. They highlight the means used to counteract, maintain or accelerate their transformation, syncretism, perpetuation or disappearance.
