My performance as a technical translator is based in a sound technical background and many years of translating from English (a language that I have studied and read since childhood) any number and kind of technical texts, besides reading quantities of English fiction, as well as much scientific information. I have just finished a three-year Translators’ Training Course, more out of interest in the languages’ mechanisms, similarities and differences, than out of professional need.
I have a degree in Electronic Engineering, a three-year post-graduate course in Computer Sciences and Artificial Intelligence, and a number of courses related with the fields I worked on as an Engineer. I began translating technical texts for my classmates when I began studying Engineering, in the early 1970s. All through my 18 years of IT and communications work (mostly in Software development and adaptation), the translation to Spanish of Operation Instructions, User Guides and similar texts, and the localization of the programs for the Argentina’s market was a part of my job. Since 2002 I have worked as a full-time technical translator, beginning with the IT field but soon adding texts on Electrical Engineering, and then on Mechanical devices, the Oil Industry, IT security, and even occasional texts on commercial and sociological issues.
Following my personal interests, I have taken part in literary workshops, I have written several short stories published in SC&F publications, had a share in the redaction of scientific divulgation texts (the more important one was on the Global Warming phenomena, which involved a fair amount of translation from the IPCC reports).
From this experience, I daresay my Spanish writing is quite above the average quality, and the same can be said of my vocabulary in both languages.
I meet my deadlines punctually and always double-check my translations and my proof-reading jobs, before I send them to my customers. Even when I work in non-profit bases, a work well done is, to my mind, an objective in itself.
