Source text - English Neocis, established in 2009 in Miami, is the developer of the Yomi robotic system for dental implant surgery. It received FDA clearance in late 2016 as the first and only FDA-cleared robotic system for dental surgery.
To date, Neocis has secured over $160 million (around RMB 1.16 billion) in funding, with the latest round of $40 million (around RMB 290 million) completed in October 2022. This round included participation from Intuitive Ventures, the independent venture capital division of Intuitive Surgical that develops and manufactures the da Vinci Surgical System.
Since 2018, Neocis has been actively commercializing Yomi, which has been utilized in over 23,500 dental surgeries in the United States as of 2022. The Yomi robotic system has experienced rapid sales growth in North America, with a compound annual growth rate of 340%. Notably, three prominent American universities, including New York University, have adopted Yomi robots.
Yomi is a digital surgical navigation and operating system that comprises both hardware and software components. The hardware system includes the end effector, robotic arm, and vision system as primary components. The software system incorporates the vision control module (core technology), surgical planning module, human-machine interaction module, and robot control and navigation control module.
Yomi primarily serves as an assistant for both the planning (preoperative) and surgical (intraoperative) phases of dental implant surgery. It provides clear and visualized images of the surgical site displayed on a screen, enhancing the dentist’s visibility and reducing surgical time for patients. The specific operational process is as follows:
• The patient wears a bite plate, and a 3D scan of the jawbone and teeth is performed on the patient. The scanned 3D data is then imported into the YomiPlan software.
• Yomi displays the 3D image created from the 3D scan on its touch screen. Dentists can use the visual representation on the screen to identify the areas where dental implant surgery is needed. They can then create a surgical plan and have a preoperative visualization of the surgical process.
• Under the guidance of Yomi’s navigation control, dentists perform dental implant surgery on the patient. A positioning arm device connected to the host system is attached to the bite plate worn by the patient, enabling mechanical navigation and positioning. The dentist manually operates Yomi’s controllable robotic arm, similar to traditional procedures, while Yomi restricts the position, direction, and depth of the drill, ensuring accurate implant placement.
• During the surgery, Yomi automatically issues warnings and displays bone density information if the surgical tool approaches a nerve or paranasal sinus area. It can also make relative adjustments if there is slight patient movement, maintaining surgical accuracy.
