Source text - Dutch In deze bijdrage beschrijf ik het proces van de deconstructie en reconstructie van de islam in de overgang van een islamitische naar een westerse cultuur vanuit de omgang met de bronnen van de islam, de Koran en hadieth. In dit veranderingsproces hebben moslims een aantal opties: traditionalisme, midden-orthodoxie, fundamentalisme, radicalisme en religieus liberalisme. Deze termen zijn ten dele aan het christendom ontleend. In de verandering van religieuze tradities met een heilig boek treden analoge verschijnselen op. Vanuit mijn bekendheid met het veranderingsproces in hervormde en gereformeerde kerken (met name in Nederland) zal ik het veranderingsproces onder moslims beschrijven die vanuit islamitische landen naar West-Europa zijn verhuisd en daar een “Europese” vorm van de islam tot stand brengen. Zowel over fundamentalisme en islamitische radicalisme als over de westerse islam is veel geschreven. Mijn ingang in het onderwerp is de religie-hermeneutiek: de studie van het proces van verstaan van het heilige boek, i.c. de Koran. Vanuit de hermeneutiek kunnen we verklaren waarom de aanpassing van de islam aan ‘het Westen’ uitloopt op interne discussies over de aard van het gezag van de Koran en laten zien welke opties moslims hierbij hebben.
Translation - English In this paper I will describe the process of the deconstruction and reconstruction of Islam in its transition from an Islamic to a Western culture, and will do so from the perspective of how “Western” Muslims understand the sources of Islam: the Qur’an and the hadith. In this process of change Muslims have a number of options: traditionalism, moderate orthodoxy, fundamentalism, radicalism and religious liberalism, terms which are borrowed partly from Christianity. Religious traditions with sacred texts display certain similarities when involved in the process of change. On the basis of my knowledge of the process of change in Reformed and free Reformed churches (in particular in the Netherlands), I will describe the process of change among Muslims who have moved to Western Europe from Islamic countries and have given an “European” form to Islam. Much has been written about fundamentalism and Islamic radicalism as well as about Western Islam. I will approach this topic from the perspective of religious hermeneutics: the study of the process of understanding a sacred text—in this case, the Qur’an. On that basis we can explain why the adaptation of Islam to “the West” leads to internal discussions on the nature of the authority of the Qur’an and show what options Muslims have.

Es mag sein, dass das Evangelium für viele Menschen heute erst nach einem längeren Lernprozess sprechend wird, aber in der Regel hat man auch in kirchlich geprägten Kreisen den Eindruck, dass die Spannung zwischen der freien Gnade Gottes und der Werkgerechtigkeit des Menschen entweder als ein kirchentrennender Faktor in der abendländischen Tradition gehalten wird, der heute wieder ins Blickfeld ökumenischer Dialoge und Vereinbarungen gerückt wird, um die Konfessionen mit einander zu versöhnen, oder als ein Gegenstand theologischer Theoriebildung betrachtet wird, der mit der Lebensführung und Glaubenserfahrung der neuzeitlichen Menschen keinen Zusammenhang hat.
Translation - English The relevance of the message of the justifying act of God is not limited to its religious proclamation but also extends to concrete human social life. It may be that many people today find the Gospel convincing only after having going through lengthy instruction in the faith, but, as a rule, one has the impression that also in church circles the tension between the free grace of God and righteousness through works is either viewed as a divisive factor in the Western tradition, brought today again into the field of vision of ecumenical dialogue and agreements in order to reconcile the different confessions with each other or is treated as a topic of theoretical theological education, which has no connection with the lifestyle and faith experience of contemporary people.

My approach to translation and editing/proofreading:
The name of my website, "wordfair," captures in one word my approach to the task of translating and editing/proofreading. It suggests the image of the carefree jumble and mix of people meeting and interacting, if only for a second, in an atmosphere of laughter and excitement. It suggests the excitement of children running around, faces and hands sticky with cotton candy and candied apples, adults who for a few hours can again be children and experience the wonder of the world.
Words, obviously, have to do with communication and the word "fair" indicates, as much as the circus in Charles Dickens’ Hard Times, in John Irving’s Son of the Circus or Robertson Davies’ Deptford Trilogy, the place of the imagination, of creativity, of life itself. And communication is life. It is how we live with one another and how we interact on all levels of society. Fiction, newspapers, technical manuals are all part of this wordfair.
In the same way that a ride at a fair or simply savouring the childhood taste of cotton candy can fill us with wonder, so too words should grab us, hold our attention, fill us with wonder and lead us on to the next word, sentence, paragraph, page.
This explains my approach to both my own writing and to my translation and editing work. Translation, as much as our own writing, is a work of the imagination. This is so, first, because writing itself is an act of imagination, a creative process in which we are entirely involved. A text that does not involve us will not be a good text. In the second place, this is so because the act of translation requires an additional exercise in imagination on the part of the translator. The translator must transpose him- or herself into the writer's mind, to hear and see what the writer saw and heard while writing. And that is what I see as the translator's task: not simply to translate words but to translate the sense, the meaning, the intention as best I can.
"Wordfair" - it is thus, by invoking the imagination, that I can best serve my customers' needs.
