Source text - English 1 Making informal requests and giving advice: the informal imperative
In Unit 23 you learned to use the formal imperative for giving directions and instructions. But if you are addressing people in an informal way you need to use the informal imperative. In this unit you will learn to use this to make requests and give advice.
A Formation
The informal imperative has different positive and negative forms only. The tú form is like the present tense tú form of the verb, but without the -s. For the vosotros form, replace the -r of the infinitive with a -d.
Espera un momento. Wait a moment
Por favor, traéme una taza de té. Please bring me a cup of tea.
Abrid la puerta, por favor. Open the door please.
B Making requests
Note that the expression por favor is often added to requests made with the imperative, in order to make this less commanding, e.g. Ayúdame por favor. Help me, please.
Care must also be taken with intonation. A rising intonation towards the end of the sentence will show the listener that what he is hearing is a request rather than a command.

Dans le chapitre 23 nous avons vu comment utiliser l’impératif lorsque l’on vouvoyait notre interlocuteur pour donner des indications et des instructions. Dans ce chapitre, nous étudierons l’impératif au tutoiement pour demander quelque chose et donner un conseil.
a Comment se construit-il ?
Au tutoiement, l’impératif ne se construit pas de la même façon s’il est affirmatif ou négatif. Nous ne verrons ici que les formes de l’impératif affirmatif.
À la deuxième personne du singulier (tú), l’impératif se construit comme à la deuxième personne du singulier du présent mais sans le -s. À la deuxième personne du pluriel (vosotros), il faut remplacer le -r de l’infinitif par un -d.
Espera un momento. Attends un instant.
Por favor, tráeme una taza de café. Apporte-moi une tasse de café s’il te plaît.
Abrid la puerta, por favor. Ouvrez la porte s’il vous plaît.
b Demander quelque chose
Lorsque l’on demande quelque chose en utilisant l’impératif, on emploie souvent l’expression por favor pour adoucir le ton de la phrase, on dira par exemple : Ayúdame por favor Aide-moi s’il te plaît.
Faites également attention à l’intonation ; une intonation montante vers la fin de la phrase indiquera à l’interlocuteur qu’il s’agit d’une demande et non d’un ordre.
