“Narrowing the Gap”
Background
Over the past 20 years the poorer neighbourhoods in the City have seen their basic quality of life deteriorate compared to other areas. A household survey was conducted by MORI in 2002 in the 5 neighbourhoods eligible for the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund (NRF). It discovered major gaps or inequalities between those neighbourhoods and the rest of Plymouth and England in health, education, crime, housing, employment, income and, satisfaction with services :-
• Only 42% of adults are working in NRF neighbourhoods compared to 60% nationally
• Over 9% of households have been the victims of domestic burglary over the last 12 months compared to 4% nationally
• At £259, average weekly household incomes are half the national average
• 1 in 6 households are not happy with the state of repair of their property compared to 1 in 7 nationally
• Over half of respondents (54%) have no access to a computer, internet or e-mail technologies compared to 22% nationally
• Only 1 in 10 households are satisfied with street cleaning compared to 1 in 3 nationally
It is now time to act to ensure that these issues are addressed through a citywide strategy, which targets our greatest efforts on the most needy communities and neighbourhoods.

Contexte
Depuis vingt ans, les quartiers défavorisés de Plymouth ont vu leur niveau de vie de base se détériorer comparé à celui dans d’autres quartiers. Une étude des ménages a été réalisé par MORI en 2002 dans les cinq quartiers éligibles pour la Bourse pour l’Aménagement du Territoire (BAT). Elle a découvert de graves disparités ou inégalités entre ces quartiers avec le reste de Plymouth et Angleterre dans les domaines de santé, éducation, crime, logement, emploi, revenu et satisfaction des services :-
• Seulement 42% des adultes travaillent dans les quartiers BAT comparé à la moyenne nationale de 60%

• La moyenne du salaire hebdomadaire de ces ménages est de £259, la moitié du salaire national moyen

• Plus de la moitié des participants (54%) n’ont pas accès à un ordinateur, internet ou facilités email comparé à 22% à l’échelle nationale
• Juste 1 ménage sur 10 est satisfait du nettoyage des rues, comparé à 1 sur 3 au niveau national
Le moment est venu d’assurer que ces problèmes soient adressés par une stratégie urbaine qui focalise sur les communautés et les quartiers les plus défavorisés.

I lived and worked in South Korea where in addition to translating, I taught English to Korean students from 3 to 75 years old. I am currently living in Burgundy, France.
My language skills were developed from a young age, being surrounded by a dual culture with my French father and my Indonesian mother. I grew up in 5 countries (The Netherlands, Angola, Indonesia, Brunei, France) before going to university in the UK.
After studying business and translation, I then worked in international marketing before honing my communication skills in the environmental sector. My responsibilities in both fields included commissioning translation assignments for various communication materials and I translated several brochures and reports myself.
In parallel, I also taught French, English and Indonesian, in both one-to-one as well as within groups. These experiences gave me an initial insight into the buzzing world of linguists and in 2005, I decided to work for myself.
