EOS) General field: Science Detailed field: Psychology
Source text - English The key region for discussion in this paper is the dACC. These are the prime nodes within this network for attentional control, and they are also directly implicated in context evaluation (Jiang, et al., 2016). Consequently, they are important in determining the exogenous or endogenous stimuli/thoughts to which the person will attend (Jiang, et al., 2016; Melcher and Gruber, 2009). In highly hypnotisable individuals there is a significant reduction in dACC activity during hypnosis, and this is also directly correlated with the depth of the reported hypnotic state (Jiang, et al., 2016). Therefore, during hypnosis the reduction in the dACC activity indicates less vigilance about possible alternative foci of attention (Jiang, et al., 2016). In other words, this lessening in activation reflects suspension of critical judgement and a reduction in the awareness of alternatives (Tellegen and Atkinson, 1974), which is associated with a decline in personal agency (e.g. self-control) and an increase in suggestibility during hypnosis (Spiegel and Spiegel, 2008).
English to Spanish: Que le den al trabajo. Artículo original en AEON (Fuck Work. James Livingston, 2016) General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Source text - English So this Great Recession of ours – don’t kid yourself, it ain’t over – is a moral crisis as well as an economic catastrophe. You might even say it’s a spiritual impasse, because it makes us ask what social scaffolding other than work will permit the construction of character – or whether character itself is something we must aspire to. But that is why it’s also an intellectual opportunity: it forces us to imagine a world in which the job no longer builds our character, determines our incomes or dominates our daily lives.
In short, it lets us say: enough already. Fuck work.
English to Spanish: La Naturaleza de la Hipnosis. Traducción (2009). Informe de la British Psychological Society (The Nature of Hypnosis, 2001) General field: Science Detailed field: Psychology
Source text - English The term ‘hypnosis’ denotes an interaction between one person, the ‘hypnotist’, and another person or people, the ‘subject’ or ‘subjects’. In this interaction the hypnotist attempts to influence the subjects’ perceptions, feelings, thinking and behaviour by asking them to concentrate on ideas and images that may evoke the intended effects. The verbal communications that the hypnotist uses to achieve these effects are termed ‘suggestions’. Suggestions differ from everyday kinds of instructions in that they imply that a ‘successful’ response is experienced by the subject as having a quality of involuntariness or effortlessness. Subjects may learn to go through the hypnotic procedures on their own, and this is termed ‘self-hypnosis’.
