French to English: Le traitement de l'arthrite/Arthritis Treatment General field: Medical
Translation - English Arthritis Treatment
The various forms of arthritis are so different that your physician will need to develop a comprehensive, personalized treatment, specifically designed to treat your symptoms. This cannot be done until after a complete physical examination, a series of tests and usually x-rays. The most common treatments include medication, rest, physiotherapy (particularly corrective exercises and the application of heat) and in severe cases, using splints, walking aides, or orthopaedic devices and even surgery.
Rest, Exercise, Physiotherapy
The appropriate combination of rest and exercise is essential. Rest is especially important during periods when joints are painful and inflamed. However, if the arthritic joints are not used, they stiffen, or their function becomes permanently limited. Therapeutic exercise will not only help to maintain joint flexibility but will also strengthen the joint muscles.
This exercise doesn’t need to run the complete gamut of aerobics or involve active participation in a power sport. Most people with arthritis need to do a series of gentle exercises each day, that require their joints to perform a wide range of movements. The exercises don’t need to be painful or exert an excessive amount of pressure on the muscles or joints. In fact, if any part of your body is still tired one hour after your prescribed series of exercises, it is likely that you have overdone them.
You should not attempt to create your own exercise system. Let your physician or your physiotherapist establish a program made especially for you. A physiotherapist may also prescribe a treatment involving the application of heat or massage. For rheumatoid arthritis in particular, hot baths, hydrotherapy and other heat applications are often beneficial.
(Some people move to places with warmer climates because they feel better there. Do not make such a decision without consulting specialists. There is no evidence that a hot or dry climate has any effect on the condition).
