English to French: Announcement regarding a children's hospital General field: Medical Detailed field: Medical: Health Care
Source text - English Obesity is a complex problem that is reaching epidemic proportions and represents a major threat to the health of our children and youth with both immediate and long-term consequences. It is estimated that there are over 12,000 children and youth living in Eastern Ontario with complex severe obesity and CHEO currently sees significant numbers of these children/youth with complex severe obesity across all sub-specialties.
Despite the special health care needs of this population and the need for coordinated care,
there is no formal mechanism in place for developing, communicating, and coordinating a
patient-specific plan of care. Furthermore, in the absence of aligned interprofessional support, there is nothing in place to treat the underlying obesity.
CHEO is well positioned to respond to the need for pediatric obesity services in Eastern Ontario and is currently planning to launch a Pediatric Regional Assessment and Treatment Centre (PRATC).
The PRATC which will provide clinical services for 96 children/youth with complex severe obesity on an annual basis will fill a crucial gap in the provision of treatment and coordination of services for children and youth with complex severe obesity. The benefits this program include:
Children and youth with complex severe obesity will receive comprehensive, coordinated, evidence-based treatment that will reduce obesity and associated health problems.
Community providers will have improved capacity to care for children and youth with complex severe obesity and for those who may be at risk of developing complex severe obesity (primary and secondary prevention)
Through collaborative relationships and partnerships with organizations that provide related and/or complementary services, the PRATC will support seamless transitions between health care providers.
The creation of a much-needed venue to systematically evaluate various interventions and provide a setting for clinical and epidemiological research in treatment and prevention of pediatric obesity.
The promotion of education and dissemination of knowledge in the area of pediatric obesity and its associated health conditions
