"AI and the Interpreter across Specializations and Settings"

The spread of AI across industries can feel like a tsunami hitting everywhere, all at once. But in reality, the spread is varied, hitting some areas harder than others. This is true for interpreting. How AI is impacting your area of interpreting will differ depending on your specialization and the settings you work in. In some, AI to replace human interpreters is a major focus, and in others, the focus is more on supporting the performance of human interpreters. This session will provide a snapshot overview of the different kinds of AI technology coming into interpreting, how they are being applied and what early trends we are seeing for how interpreters work.

15:35 - 16:17 GMT FINISHED

"New professions for 2025: Transinterpreters and Pemintechs"

Transinterpreters are linguists who can work as translators AND/OR interpreters at any given time. Pemintechs, on the other hand, are machine translation post-editors who are also trained interpreters AND pride themselves on being tech-savvy individuals who can easily adapt to the needs of an ever-changing marketplace. Start thinking about (and working towards) new skills! About 10 years ago, Claudia (and her crystal ball -smile-) introduced us to the concept of Transinterpreters. She truly anticipated the needs of the marketplace as we see companies needing translators to interpret and interpreters to translate in our expanding virtual and physical worlds. She expands on this concept and shows you what you need to do today to keep up with mainstream assignments. Claudia then coined and presented the concept of Pemintechs at the TAUS Global Content Summit in New York, just before the pandemic. As with most of her predictions, we are seeing the market dramatically change the requirements for employees and freelancers making a living in today's language services industry. She predicts that you would be wise to prepare and acquire these skills to meet the coming demands. The world is moving fast. Are you ready for the challenge? As always with Claudia's training, she covers the big issues and gives you specific tools to work on your personal growth.

"How to Go From Translator to Language Flow Architect with Gen AI "

Most people think of Generative AI and Large Language Models as an improved alternative to Machine Translation. However, we see Large Language Models as the door to an entirely different paradigm for translators. It's not anymore about post-editing a static feed, but about working dynamically with an engine that learns and adapts to your terminology, style, and linguistic decisions. In this presentation, we will demonstrate exactly how translators can reshape their role as Language Flow Architects. In this new paradigm, they are working both as editors and as teachers. Our engine is not just producing feeds coming from a static corpus but living and breathing through your work. It's a bit subtle at first but remarkable if you give it a chance. We look forward to a great conference!

"The fusion of AI, MT and CAT in translation: The case of LTR + RTL languages combined in a single text"

Most of us know that CAT tools are here to make our lives easier. Machine Translation (MT) and, more recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) have come in handy as allies in a variety of situations. In this presentation, I propose adding a new dimension to this situation, namely, what happens when we have to translate documents that include a mix of languages and, more specifically, left-to-right (LTR) in combination with right-to-left (RTL) languages. Join me for this little piece of research on what happens to the brains of CAT tool, MT and AI platforms when we feed them "mixed" texts. Our starting point will be a popular song that was published with a mix of Hebrew and Arabic. Let's get it!
