It is such a low bridge that anyone on board a small boat has to duck while passing under it. Yet it is so high that one is able to have a full view of the lakes and hills. It is old and was once the one and only path to the Forbidden City for Zai Feng , the Prince Regent of Qing Dynasty who went to court every day. Yet it is new in another sense as it was renovated once in 1984 and again in 2011, bringing youth back to this ancient bridge. Though it looks like a single-arch bridge roughly made from no fancy materials but blue stone and white marble, it was cleverly designed, resembling an inverted silver ingot. Located in the west of the city, at the intersection of Qianhai and Houhai of Shichahai scenic area, this bridge is called the Silver Ingot Bridge . Standing on the bridge and looking at the Western Hills from afar, with lotus flowers, willow trees and green lotus leaves in the background, the rolling Hills are mirrored at the end of the wide lake. Though one can admire it at many places in Beijing, the view of Western Hills is never as attractive as the one seen here. Hence it’s become a famous scenic spot in Beijing named Admiring Western Hills on Silver Ingot Bridge. It is almost impossible for anyone to see the Western Hills without standing on a higher land in Beijing city, except the Silver Ingot Bridge which is almost at the same sea level with land. Houhai Lake, wide and stretching into the horizon, forms an arc shape view angle. Looking far to the west, one gets a wider view of the lake until a glimpse of hills appears at where water and haze gather. A grayish-blue shadow in the mist looms on the horizon. So people named it the best hill view spot by the water in the city. This location commands an excellent vantage point for a striking vista of the Western Hills, with all its many colourful hues from dawn to dusk one could almost reach out and touch it. Built in Ming Dynasty, the Silver Ingot Bridge was once visited by Li Dongyang, the Cabinet Grand Secretary , also a litterateur, after his tour to the Ci’en Temple . Gazing at the Western Hills with fond memories, 》 Li uttered an improvised poem named “Pleasant Encounter after a Visit to Ci’en Temple” in which he praised the breathtaking scenery. Since then the line “the best vista view of a breathtaking scenery in the city” has become the sobriquet of the scenery viewed at the Silver Ingot Bridge.
