According to my Norstedt's dictionary, "känning" can mean either "touch/contact" or "pain."

: In this context, it is rather obvious that they refer to "insulinkänningar", which is frequently shortened into "känningar". You can also find Google hits for "nattkänningar" that confirms this.

Thanks for the info. I checked "insulinkänning" in my Cressy's Swedish>English medical dictionary and found "hypoglycemic reaction" or "insulin reaction" entered for it. Interesting.
