I found the following information on a web page:
Backstugusittare var "i det �ldre svenska agrarsamh�llet ben�mning p� personer som bodde i s.k. backstugor, icke skattlagda mindre hus p� en jord�gares mark eller en bys allm�nning. Som social kategori var backstugusittarna en brokigt sammansatt grupp och omfattade s�v�l relativt v�lbest�llda hantverkare som dagsverksarbetare samt gamla och utfattiga personer."

neutral George Hopkins : One must remember that a crofter is [was] the owner or tenant of a small farm (ref. Collins). Backstuga is a hut or cabin (ref. Prisma). Backstugusittare were probably mostly farm labourers, not crofters.
