Translation - English All that we live should be told as a personal or public story, but there are moments so intense and relevant that they deserve the attention of a book so that libraries can tuck their pages away and aUow them to go on being told forever. The saga of the construction and operation of the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) is one of those emblematic situations that should be detailed in chapters. Launching this book is like triggering an extra turbine, dedicated exclusively to explaining the importance for the country of the other 18 turbines in the Main Powerhouse and 6 in the Supplementary Powerhouse. Even more, it is to leave a record of what was required to install the largest 100% Brazilian hydroelectric power plant - an 11,233 megawatt giant - in the heart of the Amazon, more precisely in the municipalities of Altamira and Vitoria do Xingu, both in Pará.
lt is the story of the project's adventures from the very beginning, in the 1970s, when the first studies of the basins on the right bank of the Amazon River were developed: Araguaia, Tapajos, Tocantins and Xingu, this being the first to be scrutinized, as of 1975, covering an area of 509,000 km2. Three years· of studies were conducted by 80 men, including rappelists, who mapped the terrain using 200 pre-marked points, each of which was about the size of a soccer field. The work evolved from 47 potential dam areas on the Xingu to Belo Monte. Numerous meetings with the surrounding community and specialists were held, with consequent improvements to communication and fine-tuning of the project, transforming it into the largest environmental licensing process in the history of the Brazilian lnstitute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (lbama).
