Source text - English IP uses a technique called fragmentation to solve the problem of heterogeneous MTUs. When a datagram is larger than the MTU of the network over which it must be sent, it is divided into smaller fragments which are each sent separately.
To fragment a datagram, a host or router uses the MTU and the datagram header size to calculate how many fragments are required (they must be in multiples of 8 octets). Then the header of the original datagram is copied into the headers of each of the fragments. The following fields change.
•TOTAL LENGTH to reflect the shorter size.
•MORE flag in all but the last fragment.
•FRAGMENT OFFSET to reflect the position of the fragment within the original datagram.
•HEADER CHECKSUM!
Translation - Italian IP utilizza una tecnica chiamata frammentazione per risolvere il problema di MTU eterogenee. Quando un datagramma è più grande della MTU della rete destinataria, viene diviso in frammenti più piccoli, ognuno di essi inviato separatamente.
Per frammentare un datagramma, un host o un router utilizza l'MTU e la lunghezza dell'intestazione del datagramma per calcolare il numero di frammenti necessari (che devono essere multipli di 8). Successivamente l'intestazione del datagramma originale è copiata nelle intestazioni dei singoli frammenti. Subiscono variazioni seguenti campi:
•La LUNGHEZZA TOTALE in modo da riflettere la dimensione inferiore.
•Il flag MORE in tutti i frammenti eccetto l'ultimo.
•Il campo SPOSTAMENTO LATERALE (OFFSET) per riflettere la posizione del frammento all'interno del datagramma originale.
•La CHECKSUM dell'intestazione!
