Spanish to English: COFIDES to accompany Klingele Embajales Canarias on their international expansion General field: Bus/Financial
Translation - English Madrid, 15th of March 2018.- COFIDES will support the strengthening of Klingele Embajales Canarias, S.A. in Mauritania. They will contribute 500,000 euros of their own resources through a co-investment tool.
With this figure the company will finance the acquisition of 45% of two corrugated cardboard packaging and container production companies, MPE and Mauripack. It already has a 55% share of these two companies. In so doing, Klingele Embajales Canarias will take control of both companies upon acquiring the shares of their local partner. Together with the support of the promoter, the total investment for the project will rise to 2.7 million euros.
The acquisition of MPE allows Klingele to obtain synergies with activity in the Canary Islands. This is because the sheets manufactured in the Canary Islands production centre are the main materials for manufacturing boxes and packaging at MPE. This gives them the opportunity to increase sales of both the final product and the cardboard sheets, while also gaining access to alternative markets. In addition, with the Mauripack, SARL plant, the company will also produce cardboard boxes and other corrugated cardboard products.
The chairman of COFIDES, Salvador Marín, has underlined the company’s commitment to internationalisation, and noted the importance of foreign investment in contributing to the development of the destination countries.
The managing director of Klingele Embajales Canarias, Martín Tabares de Nava, has expressed his gratitude for the confidence placed in the project, which is in line with the company’s strategic positioning in a market considered to have high potential for their products.
Klingele was founded in 1953 and focuses on manufacturing corrugated cardboard sheets, containers, and packaging for the agri-food and industrial sectors. It has had a presence in the Mauritanian market since the 1980s, when it started exporting its products, and subsequently acquired a minority share in a plant which makes sheets of corrugated cardboard. It currently has 60 employees in Spain and is managed independently from Spain.
Klingele has a 29,000 m2 production plant in Puerto de Santa Cruz, which gives strategic advantages for importing the paper needed for their production process, and for exporting to other markets. The company produces for the Canary Islands market and exports part of their production to nearby African countries such as Mauritania, Senegal, Mali and Ivory Coast. In 2017, 80% of sales were made in the domestic market, although the company aims to increase the percentage of revenue coming from foreign markets.
A COUNTRY OPEN TO INVESTMENT
According to the latest economic and trade report by ICEX, the main exporting partners for Mauritania are China, Switzerland, Italy and Spain. Exports to Spain rose to 179 million euros in 2015, making it the first EU member with 37% of the total.
