Bio

Only recently I started working as a freelance translator, but I
have a long history with foreign languages learning and translation. I
have been doing technical and journalistic translation, as a tool to perform my
professional activities, but also literary translation, mostly as a hobby to
which I have been dedicating myself for more than twenty years. I have a
published literary translation from English into Portuguese: the novella The
Golden Lotus of the Blue Sea, by Shrii Prabhat Rainjan Sarkar.

My background, my professional experience and my personal interests are
eclectic. I started in a technical career (engineering), but then I
extended my horizons to the social sciences (classical political economy), tax
law, the Portuguese language (which I know deeply) and the learning and use of
other languages. For many years I have been cultivating a hobby that has
made me meet people all over the world and visit several countries: the game of
chess.

I have travelled abroad about thirty times, mostly to Europe. I lived
two months in Paris, France, three months in Berlin, Germany, and a total
period, adding several stays, of one and a half year in Belgrade, Serbia. I
have a fascination for other countries, other cultures, other languages. I know
some Classical Latin, Classical Greek, German, Italian, Spanish, Serbian,
Russian, of course Spanish, besides the two foreign languages I master in
reading and writing: English and French.

My approach as a translator is based on two premises: the first is that,
in order to translate a text, I must first understand it as thoroughly as
possible. I don't translate what I don't understand. I don't
translate isolated words, I translate global meanings. The second premise
expresses my mission as a translator: to make the final recipient of the
message, the reader-user of the translated text, understand precisely what I
have understood in the text.  To carry out this mission of well
communicating, I have developed for decades - especially in my native language,
Portuguese - the ability to construct phrases, to know how to transmit the same
content in many different ways, adapting the tone, the style, the lexicon, the jargon
to the branch of knowledge involved, to the specifics of the target audience,
to the standardized language of the environment and the people the message is
intended for.

I translate almost exclusively into my native language, Portuguese. However,
I can also accept  translating from
Portuguese into English and French, provided that my work will be reviewed by
another translator who knows the language pair in contact and who is a native
speaker of the target language.  I do believe that very good translations can be achieved by joining efforts of native
speakers of both source and target languages, especially if the project's
organizational structure provides effective collaboration and exchange of ideas
between the professionals.
