English to Spanish: Cinderella (Transcreation) General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English What Cinderella suffered from the two
sisters and her step mother, how she grew
into a fairy-princess here is seen,
told by a pair of scissors on a screen.
Snip! and we have the king’s R. S. V. P.!
Snip! and the magic birds have set her free,
pecking the lentis from the ashes, but
“No place at Court”, they tell her, “for a slut”.
Snip! And she gathers from her apple-trees
the golden gown of the Hesperides,
the silver coach. But, “When the clock strikes one”,
warn the bird-voices, “Cinderella, run!”
Snip! and the ball, the lights, the trumpeters,
the high Pavane, the Prince’s heart – all hers!
Snip! and the time remorseless seeks to trip her,
flying, she takes his soul, but leaves her slipper!
Snip! and what can a royal lover do,
but tell the world “My kingdom for a shoe.”
They search, they measure. Ladies pinch and strain,
one sister even cuts her foot – in vain!
For snip! A bird has whispered in his ear
“Seek in the cellar, prince! Your bride is here!”
She comes, she fits in the shoe, she curtseys, and
passes forever into fairyland.
