Coaching and Science: Biomechanics Perspectives

Introduction
This chapter aims to demonstrate how biomechanics can contribute to the effectiveness of the coaching process.
Through the application of mechanical principles to biological systems biomechanics provides a relevant scientific tool.
This chapter leads the reader through specific examples of how knowledge of biomechanics can assist the coach in the gym through the development of tacit knowledge in relation to how skills ‘work’ and how best to develop skills.
This chapter explores key research themes applied to the Sport of Gymnastics, specifically the Coaching Biomechanics Interface (Irwin et al., 2013), the evolution of complex skills (Irwin et al., 2011; Kerwin and Irwin, 2011) and how the changes in apparatus and code of points have influenced the development of skills, with examples drawn from the research presented on the female Tkatchev by Kerwin and Irwin (2010; 2011) and Irwin et al. (2011).
Fundamental to gymnastics skill learning is the development of techniques that are effective, efficient and safe. Research has identified how coaches develop skills from a psychological and conceptual perspective (Irwin et al., 2005), combined the principles of training and biomechanics to the increase the understanding of the most effective skill pathways for learning gymnastics movements (Irwin and Kerwin, 2005; 2007a, 2007b).
Contemporary theories of motor control have been embedded into how best to develop skills. Research by Williams et al. (2012), will be discussed with reference to recent motor learning literature.
