kursverksamhet

Swedish to English Other Education / Pedagogy
Kursverksamheten vid Stockholms universitet
"Kursverksamheten" at Stockholm University

Folkuniversitet är ett studieförbund bildat av de fem Kursverksamheterna vid universiteten i Stockholm, Uppsala, Göteborg, Lund, och Umeå.
Folkuniversitetet is an educational association formed by the five Kursverksamhets at the Universities in Stockholm, Uppsala, Gothenburg, Lund, and Umeå.

I've seen examples online where "Kursverksamhet" was left untranslated in an otherwise English sentence, but I'm not so sure I should do the same.

Discussion

Anna Grynfeld Smith Nov 13, 2010:
Barry Appleby had an important point in response to my answer. So, here´s an overview that is based on my experiences from 13 yrs at Swe unis and 3 courses at the Folkuniversitetet/Kursverksamheten (F/K).
Differences:
1) The courses at (F/K) usually cost - uni is for free.
2) Usually much more difficult to get accepted to a uni course.
3) You normally have to pass an exam att uni. At F/K you don´t (correct me if I´m wrong).
4) You earn uni credits/points at uni - at F/K you don´t.
5) Many, but not all, courses at F/K are hobby-related.
But it´s not black and white:
1) Some uni courses are extremely easy. Many of the students that take these courses do it in order to get "free" credits and thereby "studiebidrag", so that they can party all week :).
2) At the uni, there are evening courses, online and distance courses, and some courses only include a few seminars a week.
3) There are courses at F/K that keep a very high standard (and are more challenging than some uni courses).
So, I hope that David Young now can make an informed decision :)

extramural department

Suggestion for the whole phrase:"the Extramural Department at Stockholm University"

"Folkuniversietetet is an association of five foundations: the extra-mural departments attached to the Universities of Stockholm, Uppsala, Göteborg, Lund and Umeå." See link below.
(It´s a shame they have misspelt Folkuniversitetet ;))

From Chambers: extramural adj 1 said of courses, etc: for people who are not full-time students at a college, etc. 2 outside the scope of normal studies.

From Wiki: Extramural means to study outside, but under the aegis of, a university or other institution. Extramural studies are taken by the student away from the physical campus, and are often used for those unable to attend classes.

Thanks Anna :)
disagree Barry Appleby : extra-mural gives the impression that these courses are university level, which they are not. I lived in Göteborg for 27 years and knew people who worked and taught at Folksuniversitet there. These are day/evening courses.

They define themselves as extramural departments ass. to universities on their own website (see ref above). You are right that the courses are generally easier. Does it matter though? There are both evening courses & easy courses given at the uni :)->Disc

adult education association

The courses provided by Folksunivesitet are similar to those provided
Medborganskolan) associated with the Moderates, I believe) and ABF,
closely linked to the Social Democrats. These two organisations and others are not linked to any university.

For non-Swedes this term explains what the organisations do. the fact that one of them is part of a university is irrelevant and of no use in explaining what "kursverksamhet" literally "course operation" denotes.
Example sentence:

Sweden’s largest adult education association launches video
