Swedish term

bidragsverksamhet

Swedish to English Bus/Financial Finance (general) analysis of the effect of design on companies
Conclusions drawn from an investigation into profitability of government investment in design for small and medium-sized companies to reap back the funds in the form of increased VAT, etc. to make the investment worthwhile.
One country's investment was aimed at experimentally testing the effects of design, whereas the other country's investment was aimed more at *bidragsverksamhet* och designcheckar kopplade till designverksamhet.
This text has been written by an economist and I'm not sure of the expression here - obviously it concerns funding. Funding companies?
Sorry about the English but it's quicker for me to explain the context of the document like that rather than write a whole Swedish paragraph.
Advice would be appreciated.

Discussion

Helen Johnson (asker) Feb 26, 2007:
I'm not surprised you find it challenging, Peter - the whole of this document's like that, i.e. a summary of research carried out by means of questionnaires, and written in an academic way which sometimes appears to be more from the point of view of what the author knows in his/her head rather than the ease of reading and comprehension (!) of the end reader. Still, it's good to think about problems like this sometimes. Gives the brain some good exercise ;)

contributory régime/approach

Another challenging Helen Johnson question, certainly keeps us on our toes. So here is my Monday morning guess.

I interpret it as meaning that one government has a rather hands-off approach, and makes contributions rather than getting involved with more detail matters such as design.

In my experience, the word "verksamhet" is often just padding, and can be ignored or expressed rather differently in English. as in my suggestions.
Peer comment(s):

agree EKM : Agree 100% with your analysis of "-verksamhet" as a padding word. Other, more directly translated, but still vague options might be 'funding activities', 'financial support activities'... but I do like 'approach' too. :)
