Discussion

Helen Johnson (asker) Oct 25, 2009:
In case it helps The text is also written with a heavy overtone of irony in places.
Helen Johnson (asker) Oct 25, 2009:
Text is in Swedish with some wordplay occasionally Text is talking about steps that were taken in the 1990s financial crisis compared with steps that could be taken today (in Sweden). I got the impression that "husbank" did mean the sole provider of all things financial. I've also seen it on Google in a derogatory context, apparently referring to people who (e.g.) marry a man so he can be a sugar daddy and provide everything - unless I've misunderstood. Also refers to banks taking steps for their own gain rather than to protect their customers. Not sure when the text was written but there are a few texts that refer to different editions of a publication.

interesting reference See also this reference: http://www.saptechies.com/use-the-same-house-bank-id-for-two...

was the original text written by a native Norwegian speaker?

another possibility, from the context (and not necessarily from the term itself), that it appears in this context that husbank is used to mean the "primary bank" that the company would use.

"One stop shop" is another, less formal, term which maybe could possibly be used here.
Peer comment(s):

agree Madeleine MacRae Klintebo : This is a term that also conveys the meaning, i.e. that it's the bank where the company conducts most of its business.

Thanks for your comments. Yes, I agree - that this would be the best term, but it presumes that I have understood the context of the text correctly (which in fact I am not certain about).

housing bank

a husbank is a housing bank.

But with the limited text supplied, it is not clear it fits the context (hence level 2).

P.S. Husbanken is the Norwegian State Housing Bank - but that doesnt appear to be what they mean here.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Madeleine MacRae Klintebo : To me a "housing bank" (not that I've ever come across one) would refer to some kind of organisation keeping check on housing stock.

Thanks for your comments. Yes, I agree - but they do exist. But then there is the Husbanken, which is the Norwegian State Housing Bank (dealing with housing and housing policy). However this is in Norway, so unless the text is about Norway ...

neutral Madeleine MacRae Klintebo : None of you references appear to have been written by native EN speakers.

neutral Charlesp : ?? "house bank" sounds like a odd term, a house bank sounds like a bank that gives loans for houses, and not a term used in the IT context relating to banking. But maybe. Don't think it works in this context though.

I got the impression too that "husbank" is an institution that is the sole provider of all things financial for a company.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Viachaslau : can neither agree nor disagree. Simply can't find this in the source.

agree Madeleine MacRae Klintebo : "full service" or "one-stop" bank seems to convey the concept

neutral Charlesp : sounds nice, but why is it called a "husbank" rather than something else?
