Swedish term

anställningsintyg

Swedish to English Bus/Financial Human Resources
I'm really asking for the distinctions among three related, occasionally swapped terms. Please provide only authoritative (or at least generally accepted) translations for each of them if you can: anställningsintyg, anställningsbetyg and tjänstgöringsintyg. I'm doing this with one question to sort them out.

I've looked at everything available here and other sources.

Certificate of Employment If it is "Certificate of Employment," I think it needs the capital E

Certificate of Employment

Well, I'll do this as an answer, but it could as well be a reference.

First, I'll ask if you've found Swe definitions for your terms. I have an analog version of 'Personal Engelska' by Svenskt PA Forum (you can buy it online) that says anställningsintyg and tjänstgöringsintyg are basically synonyms. It translates the latter into both my suggestion and Viveca's.

I have found two sites (http://www.unionen.se/rad-och-stod/anstallningsintyg; and http://www.industriarbetsgivarna.se/arbetsgivarfragor/anstal... were I read the definitions of anställningsintyg and tjänstgöringsintyg as indicating they are indeed synonyms. And, the Eng (with much wider use) has several synonyms for this concept as well, including both suggestions.

Similarly, the term tjänstgörings- and anställningsbetyg are synonyms as far as I can see and Vivica has a good term for that, since this involves 'grading' the quality of work during employment, but which could also be 'letter of reference' (more synonyms from my PA book)

Thank you Charles! I like your suggestion as an alternative!
agree George Hopkins : Without the capital E.

proof of employment

I would suggest the following translations:

anställningsintyg - proof of employment
anställningsbetyg - letter of recommendation
tjänstgöringsintyg - proof of service
Peer comment(s):

neutral Charlesp : litterally maybe; but it is not so simple.

synonyms - usage depends upon term used by the author/issuer

Basically synonyms, and usage depends upon context and even more on the style of usage of the author/issuer.

Here are some additional, i.e. more specific, usages of these individual terms, using some more often used terms for them.

anställningsbetyg = verification of employment
anställningsintyg = testimonial reference; also engagement letter (BrEng) in some contexts.
tjänstgöringsintyg = after employment (service) has ended, i.e. Certification of (prior) Employment, or more simply, "a reference," or "letter of reference." If presently employed, then "anställningsintyg" would be the better term here, in Swedish, but in English no distinction is made between the status of presently or formerly employed.
