If someone's name is given followed by "pers. medd" in brackets (quite a few instances can be seen on Google), what does this mean please? The Google translation given is what looks like personal messages, which makes no sense of course.

I don't know that I've ever encountered this, but I would certainly interpret it as "personligt meddelande/personliga meddelanden". I don't know why you think that doesn't make sense, unless there's context that makes it not make sense. :)
