Discussion

Christopher Schröder Feb 27, 2015:
Normally called (out-of-town) superstores in the UK
Deane Goltermann Feb 26, 2015:
Properties for big stores, in other words...? (my Norwegian is 'rusty') ;-)
brigidm (asker) Feb 26, 2015:
I see now that more context is needed. The explanation I've been given is: "Det gjelder hovedsaklig i Sverige der de har skrymmande handel som segment. Med dette menes store enkle bygg som minner om logistikkbygg med god parkeringskapasistet. Ofte i utkanten av sentrum. For eksempel Smart club, Plantasjen, osv.... Mange bruker begrepet big box."

big box retail

This is a commonly used term for what in Sweden is referred to as "skrymmande handel", literally retail of large and bulky items, e.g. furniture, whitegoods, building material etc. It is also the term given in the asker's explanation...
Example sentence:

att marken kunnat användas förutom för industriändamål och lager även för partihandel och handel med skrymmande varor, exempelvis möbler och inredning, bilar, husvagnar, båtar, byggmaterial och trädgårdsartiklar.

Wal-mart, Best Buy and Ikea are examples of big-box retailers.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Deane Goltermann : This is a US invention (term and store, "big-box" is derived from the store's physical appearance.' (your reference)) They literally look like big boxes in the middle of huge, flat parking lots. But you may have a point that the Swe usage isn't a synonym.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks to Anna and everyone for your help. Although all the answers are correct, this is the one that best fits my context, which is real estate investments. The client wants me to use this one. "

I'd say your term is a synonym to the answer in http://www.proz.com/kudoz/swedish_to_english/business_commer...

I'll revisit this, mostly based on Anna's reference. But we have four suggestions referring to shops (size), but the Swe term likely, as Anna points out, refers to the type of goods being sold. (Here is a pretty clear definition, see http://www.strangnas.se/Upload/Näringsliv och arbete/Informa...

These are generally referred to as durables, durable goods, and factory hard goods (http://www.investopedia.com/terms/d/durable-goods-orders.asp... But, the context sentence specifically describes the shop/store. This leads me to think the writer misused the Swe term to mean something quite similar.

Note from asker:
Thanks, Deane. Yes, and you mentioned "big box" in that posting. Here's another link for future reference http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big-box_store
