Forgive me if I'm being terribly naïve (I'm from the chalk and slate generation ), but how, exactly, do I get to see my profile on ProZ as my clients would see it?
I've never considered the problem in the past, just sent potential clients the link to my profile (in English, I suppose). Today, I was writing to some potential direct clients who I have reason to believe from their advertising (:roll:) speak no English. I... I've never considered the problem in the past, just sent potential clients the link to my profile (in English, I suppose). Today, I was writing to some potential direct clients who I have reason to believe from their advertising (:roll:) speak no English. It occurred to me that I needed to give them something 100% French, so I searched for the link that I should send them.
Firstly, it seems that you can only change languages from the bottom of the main screen, nowhere else.
Secondly, it seems you have to log out before you can see what someone else would see - if I look at my profile, it automatically shows things that are "private". Of course, you then have to log back in to use the site to any extent.
Thirdly, although my profile text ("about me", etc) seems to be in French (did I do that??), the home page seems to be in English, even in the French version. I noticed as I particularly wanted to know how ProZ describes itself in French.
Perhaps others could comment on the above - it may be that I've missed something, although I have consulted the FAQ to the best of my ability. If it's true, do others see the need for a page "as others see me" and for the home page to be 100% localised? ▲ Collapse

Hi Sheila,
To address the first part of your question: you can remain logged in and simply click on 'Force visitor view' on your profile page (just under the 'Home' tab in the centre of the page). To exit the visitor view you click on 'Return to owner view'.

First of all, you can see how other people see your profile by clicking on 'Force Visitor View' on your profile page in the top middle (just underneath the tabs 'Home', 'Kudoz').

you send them a link to
http://fra.proz.com/profile
And the profile text which appears in the 'About Me' section was written by you and apparently you also translated it. The content in there is always what you entered yourself. I, for example, haven't translated mine, so the content in my 'About Me' section appears in English even when I view my profile in a non-English version of proZ.com. (Somewhere in the profile updater there is the option to localise your own profile - you must have done that at some point.)

Thanks Nicole and Thomas for pointing out the "force" - I must have seen it a thousand times! And thanks Enrique for adding it to the FAQ.
For the language it's seen in, I'm not so sure - my operating system is French, yet I see the site in English, but perhaps that's because I've chosen to do so.
For those of you who prefer to view the site completely in French, is it really 100% in French?

There is a section with information about the localisation of the ProZ.com website. Go to 'About' > 'Localization' to find out more about it.
There you can also find some interesting stats for each language. According to those the French localisation is 98% completed (http://eng.proz.com/?sp=localization&sp_mode=stats). Which is pretty good. I didn't find any other languages with such a high percentage.

But when I change the language to French, logout (otherwise I only see my own home page) and access "Accueil", I see the text on this page: http://fra.proz.com/ in English. Surely all the text should be in French, not just the ancillary bits.

Thanks, Russell - I never knew I could use a nice clean URL ! I certainly never knew what it was before.
That's because on my page, whether I click to go to "owner view" or "visitor view" I get those ugly urls and not the clean one.....
But now that you've kindly given me the correct one, that's the one I'll give clients, in future.

Thanks Enrique - but when I click to see my page in "visitor view" that "clean" link disappears and the URL in the location bar is the "ugly" one.
The same thing happens when I click alternatively on the "owner view" or "visitor view" link at the top of the page; the URL in the location bar reverts to the "ugly" one.

Tom,
Everyone who visits your profile using the "clean" URL will see your profile as a visitor. The "force visitor view" option is for the owner only, and it displays your profile as any visitor would see it when accessing the "clean" URL. Visitors naturally don't see all those options who are meant to be used by the owner only.
Try logging off and accessing the clean URL of your profile and you will see.
