Hi there - the more I work with other translators for the same clients or on the same translations projects, the more I would like to work with a CAT tool which provides an online collaboration feature, meaning sharing translation memories and termbases over the internet. The only solution I have heard of so far is SDL team server which is simply way to expensive.

Can anybody share his/her technique of sharing TMs or termbases online which can be accessed and edited by multiple (2-3-4) users?? Maybe there is a solution with OmegaT or another lower-priced CAT tool that works well. Or maybe you have developed a solution yourself? I am really curious.
Of course, I did a forum search on the topic already, but I didn't really find what I was looking for. So - thanks for any advice in advance!

Interesting! Have you been using the software and the online feature with SQL? What do think of its performance? Of course it's good to hear about the different solutions in the market, but if you have experiences with it let me know.

I agree this is easy, no fees, no headaches whatsoever, very effective and great technical support as well. The best tool ever. | | | Frank Czygan Germany Local time: 10:59 English to German + ... TOPIC STARTER
Thank you for your feedback. However, if you could give me detailed info about your experiences with the collaboration feature. That would be great. Plus, I personally prefer a client solution with a software installed on my computer which is why XY anywhere etc. is not the right solution for me. | | | Susan Welsh United States Local time: 04:59 Russian to English + ...
OmegaT's latest versions are developed for team translation. I don't know a thing about it because I don't require that, but there is lots of traffic about it on the OmegaT yahoo list. I gather you need one person in the group who is somewhat of a geek, to set things up.
OmegaT is free and open source.

CafeTran is computer based, any computer at that. It's cross-platform, and stand-alone. It's arguably the most advanced and feature-rich CAT tool in the market. I've been using it for more than two years now, but I don't use the collaboration feature. I write about my experience here

Besides, OmegaT supports online TM and termbase sharing. Is anyone using the OmegaT team features?? Did anyone try Dropbox as hosting provider for memories or glossaries yet? ▲ Collapse | | |

No I didn't because I can't imagine it would work, not even for a single user.
Don't forget that DropBox (SkyDrive, SugarSync, whathaveyou) is a HHD solution that happens to sync to the cloud.
Say you set up a project with just one large TM of 500 MB. You tell your CAT tool to autosave the project - including the TM, of course - every five segments. That means that DropBox will have to sync those 500 MB to the folder in the cloud every few minutes or so. All 500 MB of the TM, it's not an incremental sync. Even with a fast connection, that can - and therefore will - cause problems. And then imagine you have several large TMs, used by several translators at the same time. Again, I haven't tried it, but…
I think you will have to save and access your databases on a separate server. I do use CafeTran with DropBox, however. The path to my project is a DropBox folder that CafeTran creates. The file contains the source target file, the project TM (optional, the data are - is for some - also in the project file*), and the project file. And a Preview, if I generate one. This is doable for DropBox. It can easily sync the TM and the project file every 5 segments, the other files only need syncing once, after being created.
Cheers,
Hans
*The Project file is an XLF file. Not everybody can open XLF files, so I also save it as a TMX file. For the same reason, I create "previews" that show my translation in the original format (usually .docx). If things go terribly wrong, I can offer the client a choice of three formats.

Team Features? | Jan 18, 2013 |

As far as I can see, OmegaT doesn't offer "team features" or the use of external databases. The DropBox procedure described in the link above, only works for glossaries/lexicons that are tab del txt files (so conveniently small), and any CAT tool that allows for that glossary format can use this trick, including CafeTran, as long as the glossary isn't too big, and as long as you don't expect "real real-time" syncing. Project specific glossaries are all-important, especially if you work as a team. But it's not the whole story.
Cheers,
