The first 3 months that I worked as a freelancer, when I was mainly still searching for work as opposed to actually doing translations, I guess I was a bit disheartened and hung around the house a lot in my PJs. Then my physio said that another patient of hers who worked from home felt it was essential to separate his personal life from his working life - after getting up at the same time every day, he would walk to the local shop and by the paper. Even if he could read it online - this was just to get into a routine. Then he would come home, make himself a cuppa, and start work. The paper was for reading during his morning break and during lunch. So I tried something similar. Well, what I do is every single working day I get up whenever (usually around 7am), shower, put on comfy but clean an somewhat smart clothes (to make me feel good about me), spray on some perfume, have breakfast - and only then so I go near my computer. I find I can't relax during breakfast if I check my mails etc. first. They can wait. I don't start work at an unreasonably late hour anyway, and my clients live either within the same time zone as me or one hour ahead. Gone be the days when I used to work in my PJs. The shower wakes me up and dressing nicely puts me in a proactive mood! My PJs are reserved for sluggish times, such as sitting by the fire with a hot chocolate and reading a book or watching a DVD. A bit like Bridget Jones! I'm amazed at how many people feel comfortable starting the working day in their PJs, I don't know how ye do it, fair dues all the same!!Collapse

Hot tip Aug 14, 2006

Jack Doughty wrote:

I always check my emails first thing in the morning before getting dressed, and will reply to anything urgent and work-related that may be there.

Having once commuted into London wearing a thee-piece suit with detachable stiff collar (marketing was rather a pretentious business in those days), I ended up working as an inhouse translator where the chairman of the company had been known to wear a Superman T-shirt and jeans with a hole in the back.

Now I do the same as Jack first thing (naked before showering) as customers are one hour ahead.

Standard rig is tracksuit botton and T-shirt or sweatshirt. When it's really stinkingly hot (as recently) a useful tip is a Japanese yukata, which I got to know during my travels.

I suppose we are all different in our thinking, but I do not see why I should compartmentalise my life. It's one of the joys of working freelance.

Cheers
Chris

This is a sweltering August day in Cyprus and it is the only way I can work in comfort. Time now 13.23!

Jellabiya - 100% comfort. Aug 14, 2006

I have several Arab jellabiyas (or galabeas, or disadashas- depending on Arabic dialect) , a kind of long silk or cotton thobes for men, commonly worn in Mid East - a gift from my Arab friends. So, on weekends, when I'm at home, I prefer wearing them working. It gives full comfort and relax, and increases output. Jellabiyas are also perfect for sleeping , instead of pyjamas, expecially when the weather is awfully hot. But I'm always in my suit and necktie at my office (I run an agency as we... See more

normally I like to do a few things (breakfast, shower, swimming) before starting work, so I'm properly awake - however, if I've an urgent job to finish and I need to start really early (that's 6am for me - much admiration to those who can naturally start earlier than that, as I certainly can't) then the adrenaline wakes me up and starts me working, and as a reward for starting work early, on these days I work in my dressing gown. Uniforms... Aug 14, 2006

Standard rig is tracksuit botton and T-shirt or sweatshirt.

Same thing here, though I call this a "uniform". I have several sets of uniforms that I wouldn't wear in the street. I start my day in jeans and a T-shirt, as I always have breakfast in the cafeteria downstairs (yeah, quite convenient). Then I shower, I change into my uniform and start working. If it is too hot (although the A/C is full blast in those days), I wear a sports bra and shorts. This attire cools me down.

No pyjamas! Aug 14, 2006

Having spent years commuting in London and then years getting up at 6 and arriving in my office in Madrid by 8, smartly suited and booted, I now enjoy the luxury of being able to get up and eat my breakfast whilst checking my emails and the news in front of my pc., wearing either a dressing gown or whatever 'uniform' suits the weather - at present it's a decent cotton shirt that I wouldn't wear outside because I don't like the colour and a pair of old shorts - well, it's been 30+ here for about ... The dressing gown probably means I'm going to shave and shower after breakfast and then change into non-street clothes and start work; straight into non-street clothes normally means I'll start work after breakfast and keep on until around lunchtime, when I may well be obliged to perform my ablutions and get dressed to go out to buy some bread or some food for dinner in the local market.

What about the opposite? Aug 14, 2006

Seems I go with the majority as I, too, tend to at least check (and possibly reply to) my e-mails before having a shower and getting dressed. Sometimes when I have just received a new project in the morning I would also quickly check that I have received everything before having a shower - that way I can raise any problems (missing files, missing instructions or something like that) straight away and by the time I come back from breakfast I might already have heard back from the client and can g... Occassionaly, however, it may happen that I get my teeth into work straight away and forget about shower/breakfast/getting dressed until mid-morning or so. But hey, as others already said, that's part of the beauty of working from home.

However, once quite the opposite of all this happened to me: I was working until quite late and at some point fell asleep on the couch next to the computer. The next morning I woke up fully dressed with the computer still on. (So, not only do I sometimes work in my pyjamas, I also occassionally sleep in jeans and shirt - weird, ey?)
