Oh, that wonderful time of the year when you have to be at two places at the same time, and juggle watching all the presentations that interest you and translating some highly specific engineering instruction guides with over 17700 words. Bio
English to Portuguese translator & subtitler specialising in life & environmental sciences, and beyond.
With a solid background in Biology & Microbiology and experience as a researcher, my first brush with Translation came in 2009.
At the time, I was working on an R&D project that required some scientific software user guides to be translated into Portuguese. Having an English teacher for a mother, and having started to learn the language when I was only five years old made me the obvious choice for the task. Ever since then, I continued to work informally as a translator, translating all sorts of scientific and academic materials — papers, theses, lab protocols, general scientific documentation, certificates, diplomas, and CVs — for colleagues and fellow scientists. I like to think of it as a love affair that started softly, only to grow stronger.
In July of 2017, I started working exclusively as a freelance translator. My first project involved translating diversified web contents for the general public, focusing mainly on subjects of science communication & journalism, zoology, ecology, conservation, palaeontology, archaeology, anthropology, history, culture, astronomy, meteorology, chemistry, physics, technology, adventure, and travels & tourism.
From there on, I started to diversify my areas of expertise — not only in translation, but also in transcreation, localisation, editing/MTPE and proofreading — working in fields such as veterinary medicine & animal husbandry, nursing & health care, law & legal contracts, or finance.
Currently, I'm mostly focusing on medical, technical and literary translation, as well as media translation & subtitling, while writing my master's thesis on the subject of offensive and taboo language in independent film subtitling.
Academic qualifications:
Degree in Applied Biology: Terrestrial Animal Resources (Licenciatura — pre-Bologna), Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal);
Post-graduation in Clinical Laboratory Science, Egas Moniz School of Health & Science (Portugal);
MSc in Applied Microbiology, Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal);
MA in Translation, Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal), expected to finish in January of 2025.
I also have formal training in graphic design and web design.
