Bio
I have always been fascinated by issues of language, meaning and communication. As an independent, motivated self-starter, I know the importance of managing my own time and taking responsibility for my own work. I take deadlines and customer satisfaction very seriously.
Specialist subject: IT
As a specialist in IT, I have a significant breadth of experience across the field of computing and technology, with particular expertise in fields such as document management systems (DMS), enterprise resource planning (ERP), imaging and document workflows, scanning technologies, and other related subjects. My work history includes translations of websites, software manuals, internal messaging documents, marketing brochures, press releases and white papers. I have written, translated and reviewed content for a wide range of customers in the areas of IT and web services.
Specialist subject: education
From May to November 2012, and from April to July 2013, I took part in a long-term localisation project for a major US-based provider of educational resources. Working in a team of around ten other freelancers, my role was to review and proofread teaching resources and to supervise others’ work. This project required me to learn several new software packages, manage other members of the team (including correcting work, providing feedback and giving final approval) and meet increasingly demanding deadlines as the project went on and the number of freelancers involved was reduced to just four. This work also drew on the experience I gained from September 2009 to June 2010, working as a language assistant at the Staatliche Jenaplan-Schule in Jena, Germany. The Jenaplan-Schule is a specialist school pioneering new approaches to education, and so my time there allowed me to learn a great deal about educational theory and practice while further developing my linguistic skills. I also led the project to translate the school’s website into English, which provided valuable experience for my later career.
Academic background
My degree in German Studies covered German history, politics, culture, literature, film, economics, business and – of course – language. This has included both essay-writing and speaking in German, and a significant amount of literary and journalistic translation work (for which I was one of only four candidates to be shortlisted for the university’s translation prize). I was very proud to be awarded a first-class honours degree, including a distinction in spoken German.
German literature was a significant element of every year of my degree course, providing me with an excellent working knowledge of literary theory, practice, style and history. I have a passion for literature (both German and English) and am eager to gain practical experience in translating literary and artistic texts of all kinds.
