4. Non-applicability of the Tenant Protection Act

אובמה הוכיח מעל במת העצרת הכללית שהוא איבד את הברק. תקוותו היחידה היא שריק פרי יהיה המועמד הרפובליקני לנשיאות
פסקה אחת לפני הסוף, כשהקהל כבר מפוהק, כשהעיתונאים כבר מבינים שכותרות לא יהיו כאן, כשהנשיא עצמו כבר ודאי מברך על הסיוט שעוד רגע נגמר, פסקה אחת לפני סוף הנאום שלף ברק אובמה את הנשיא לשעבר הארי טרומן. "כשאבן הפינה של הבניין הזה עצמו הונחה, בא הנשיא טרומן לכאן, לניו יורק, ואמר: 'האו"ם הוא בעצם ביטוי לטבע המוסרי של שאיפותיו של האדם'. כאשר אנו חיים בעולם שמשתנה בקצב עוצר נשימה, זהו שיעור שאסור לנו לשכוח".

הרהורים על השגריר אנדרו יאנג
לא היה אפשר שלא להרהר השבוע בשגריר לשעבר של ארצות הברית לאו"ם אנדרו "אנדי" יאנג, שסיפורו מוכר לכל מי שהתעמק אי פעם ביחסי ישראל-ארצות הברית. יאנג היה מינוי של הנשיא ג'ימי קרטר, אחר כך הסתבך בהצבעה שנויה במחלוקת באו"ם נגד ישראל, וליתר דיוק נגד סיפוח מזרח ירושלים לישראל.
ממשלת בגין רתחה על ההצבעה, ממשל קרטר נבוך. זו הייתה שנת בחירות, 1980, וערב קרב פריימריז קשה במדינת ניו יורק, שבה הקול היהודי מכריע. סגן הנשיא וולטר מונדייל לחץ על קרטר לחזור בו מן ההצבעה. קרטר אילץ את שר החוץ שלו סיירוס ואנס להסביר שמדובר בטעות. כך או כך, קרטר הפסיד בניו יורק, ואנס התפטר זמן לא רב אחרי התקרית, ואנדרו יאנג הספיק עוד סקנדל אחד, לפני שאולץ גם הוא להתפטר - הוא נפגש בחשאי עם נציג של אש"ף.

השבוע ניהלו נשיא שחור, ושליחתו השחורה לא פחות, סוזן רייס, את קרב הבלימה של יוזמה פלסטינית באו"ם. שנת הבחירות בפתח, ונראה שכמו פעם יש לא מעט מצביעים יהודים שהמתינו למהלכי הממשל בחשדנות. יחסי היהודים והשחורים מעולם לא חזרו לתקנם. בשנות השישים, תקופת המאבק על שוויון זכויות, הייתה פריחה גדולה. אחר כך באה ההידרדרות שפרשת אנדרו יאנג הייתה אחד משיאיה.
אובמה, שהתמודד לפני שלוש שנים על הנשיאות, הבטיח לנסות ולשקם את יחסי השחורים והיהודים. "אני רוצה לבנות מחדש את מה שאני מחשיב כיחסים היסטוריים בין הקהילה האפרו-אמריקאית ובין הקהילה היהודית", אמר אז. עוד אחת מאותן הבטחות שלא הספיק לקיים.

ביום שלישי השבוע, בכנס תמיכה ב"יוניון סקוור" ניו יורק, אימץ המועמד הרפובליקני המוביל לנשיאות את העמדות הפוליטיות של נצי הליכוד. לא העמדות של נתניהו, אלא של מי שיעשו לנתניהו את המוות אם וכאשר יחודשו השיחות בין ישראל ובין הפלסטינים. ובמילים אחרות: ריק פרי מצביע דני דנון.
אין זה דבר של מה בכך. בסקר גאלופ השבוע התברר שפרי מוביל על יריבו העיקרי מיט רומני בפער משמעותי. 31 אחוז מהבוחרים הרפובליקנים אומרים שיצביעו לו בפריימריז, לעומת 24 אחוז המביעים תמיכה ברומני. שאר המועמדים משתרכים הרחק מאחור. רומני הממסדי מול פרי המהפכן. אחד מהם יתייצב בעוד שנה למערכה הפוליטית מול אובמה.
מצבו של רומני בסקרים הכללים, בקרב ראש בראש עם אובמה, טוב משל פרי. כלומר, המצביעים הרפובליקנים רוצים פרי, המצביעים האמריקאים מעדיפים רומני. ומה שנכון לכלל המצביעים, נכון שבעתיים כשמדובר ביהודים. בשבועיים האחרונים נרשמו צהלות במטה אובמה כל אימת שסקר חדש אשרר שפרי הוא כעת המועמד המוביל. אם ינצח פרי, אומרים בכירים יהודים מתומכי אובמה, לא תהיה לנשיא שום "בעיה יהודית" בבחירות האלה. היהודים לא יצביעו למועמד שהם מכנים "קיצוני" - לא יצביעו למי שעמדותיו בנושאים דת ומדינה רחוקות כל כך משלהם.
פרי התייצב השבוע בכנס התמיכה היהודי מלא ברוח קרב. את מדיניותו של אובמה בנושא הישראלי-פלסטיני כינה "כניעה" ו"סכנה". הממשל נותן "משקל מוסרי שווה לסבל הישראלי והפלסטיני, כולל למחוללי טרור", קבע . נציג הרשות הפלסטינית בארצות הברית מאען עריקאת זיכה אותו בשל כך בתואר "גזען". אך קשה להאמין שעלבון כזה יזיז את פרי מעמדותיו. היהודים שהקיפו אותו בהתרגשות היו רובם לבושים בז'קטים שחורים וחובשי כיפה, כלומר מי שמייצגים את המיעוט השמרני הקטן בקרב יהודי ארצות הברית, ולא את הרוב הליברלי הגדול שלא יצביע לפרי, בדיוק כפי שלא הצביע בסיבוב הקודם לשרה פיילין.

Translation - English Speech Shmeech: The New Obama
Obama proves from the podium of the General Assembly that he has lost his thunder. His only hope is that Rick Perry will be the Republican candidate for the presidency.
One paragraph before the end, as the audience was already yawning, as journalists were realizing that there won’t be any headlines here, as the President himself was probably already welcoming a quick end to the nightmare, one paragraph before the end of the speech, Barack Obama invoked the former U.S. President Harry Truman “when the cornerstone of this very building was put in place, President Truman came here to New York and said, “The United Nations is essentially an expression of the moral nature of man’s aspirations.” The moral nature of a man’s aspirations. As we live in a world that is changing at a breathtaking pace, that’s a lesson that we must never forget.”
It has to be read once or twice to recognize that it actually doesn’t say anything meaningful. Truman’s vague sentence is further obscured by Obama. Truman had better winged words, much better. In a small compilation book, in the first line about “making speeches”, the following quote appears: “Never use two words when one is enough” and here is what appears to be the last quote, which is equally apt: “the greatest orators were those who understood what they wanted to say, said it in short sharp sentences and leave before people start falling asleep.”
You can say many things about Obama, good things even, but when it comes to oratory, he’s a kind of riddle. He who was elected only three years ago due to his hypnotic rhetorical power, due to his ability to attract tens of thousands of excited listeners to a stadium, has lost his magic touch. Since being elected as President, he hasn’t succeeded in making a single great or memorable speech, or any speech that could become history. Anyway, here is an argument that will surely antagonize a few of the righteous to protest loudly....
...George Bush was a better speaker. Yes, that Bush, the inarticulate one, the one who didn’t know English, the Bush who only knew how to speak in short sentences, who knew what he wanted to say, who didn’t put anyone to sleep in his important speeches. Of course, Bush also had some disadvantages.
In Obama’s defense, it seems that today he understands what he didn’t understand when he was elected President, when he spoke about a Palestinian state within “two years” or in his speech last year at the U.N., when he spoke about “next year”. If making peace “were that easy, it would have been accomplished by now”, Obama said on Wednesday. One last quote from Truman is justified: “I never did give them hell. I just told the truth, and they thought it was hell.”
Reflections on Ambassador Andrew Young
It was impossible not to think this week about the former U.S Ambassador to the U.N. Andrew “Andy” Young, a familiar story to anyone who ever delves into Israeli-American relations. Young was an appointment of President Jimmy Carter, afterwards he got entangled in a controversial vote against Israel at the U.N. and more specifically against the annexation of East Jerusalem to Israel.
Menachem Begin’s government was furious with the vote, the Carter administration was confused. This was an election year, 1980 and on the eve of difficult primaries in New York, where the Jewish vote is crucial. Vice President Walter Mondale pressured Carter to back out of the vote. Carter made his foreign minister Cyrus Vance explain that it was all a mistake. In any case, Carter lost in New York; Vance resigned shortly after the incident and Andrew Young still had one more scandal left, before he too was forced to resign – he secretly met with the P.L.O’s representative.
His forced resignation caused a serious crisis in relations between the American Jewish community and the black community. Young was the first black person to represent the United States at the U.N. and Jews were blamed for the fact that because of them he was forced to leave his post.
The Jews maintained that they never demanded his resignation, “our argument is against the Foreign Ministry” was stated by those who then stood as head of the “Conference of Presidents” of Jewish organisations. But it didn’t help. A stormy emergency meeting of black leaders was held. One of its participants stated: “I have never heard such a strong expression of anti-Jewish sentiment, as I heard in this meeting”. One black organization initiated a meeting with the same P.L.O observer that Young met, Zuhdi Tarazi. Many others began to make their public support for Palestinians explicit. In New York a few severe bouts of violence were recorded.
This week, a black president and his competent black envoy, Susan Rice led a battle of containment against the Palestinian initiative at the U.N. An election year is looming and it seems that like before there are many Jewish voters waiting suspiciously for the government’s next move. Black-Jewish relations never normalized. In the 60’s, a period of struggle for equal rights was a great success, and then came the deterioration which peaked with the Andrew Young affair.
Obama, running three years before the presidency, promised to try to restore black-Jewish relations. “What I want to do is rebuild what I consider to be a historic relationship between the African American community and the Jewish community”, he later said. Another one of his promises that hasn’t come to fruition.
Rick Perry votes for Danny Danon
On Tuesday, at a rally in New York’s “Union Square”, the leading Republican candidate adopted the position of Likud’s hawks. Not the position of Netanyahu, but of those who would seek to kill Netanyahu if and when talks resumed between Israel and the Palestinians. In other words: Rick Perry votes for Danny Danon.
This is not a trivial matter. From a Gallup poll this week, it is clear that Perry leads over his main rival Mitt Romney by a significant margin. 31% of Republican voters say that they will vote for him in the primaries, compared with 24% expressing support for Romney. The other candidates are trailing far behind. The reactionary Romney versus the revolutionary Perry. A year from now one of them will run against Obama in the political system.
In the state polls, Romney is running neck to neck with Obama, better than Perry. That is to say, Republican voters want Perry, American voters want Romney and what is true for most voters, is especially true when it comes to Jewish voters. Over the past fortnight, screams of joy were recorded in Obama’s headquarters every time a new survey reconfirmed that Perry was now the leading candidate. If Perry wins, Jewish officials from Obama’s camp say that the President will not have a “Jewish problem” in this election again. Jews will not vote for a candidate that they call “extreme”, or for those whose position on the issues of religion and state are so far removed from their own.
Perry stood at a Jewish support rally this week, full of fighting spirit. Obama’s policies on the Israeli-Palestine issue were associated with the labels “surrender” and “dangerous”. Perry stated that the Government gives “equal moral weight to the suffering of the Israelis and the Palestinians, including the perpetrators of terrorist attacks”. A representative of the Palestinian Authority in the U.S., Erekat, reprimanded him for it as being “racist”. However, it is hard to believe that an insult like this will change Perry’s position. The Jews that excitedly surrounded him were mostly wearing black jackets and a kippah. In other words, those who represent the small conservative minority among American Jews and not the great liberal majority who won’t vote for Perry, just like they didn’t vote for Sarah Palin in the last round.
Anyway, when Perry says what Danon wants to hear, Jewish voters are not the top of his agenda, their weight in the Republican election process is insignificant, but the large and crucial group of voters is the Evangelists who are supposed to hand victory to Perry on a plate.

I am a professional translator and therefore I only translate into my native language, English. Whilst I am fully proficient in Hebrew, I do not translate into this language. I am fully proficient in my Source Language (Hebrew/עברית), I began studying it in childhood and continued to study it for over half my life (so far). I have also spent a lot of time in Israel and lived in an immersion situation (speaking only Hebrew on a daily basis) in England. In addition, I shall soon be undertaking a Master’s degree in Hebrew Language & Culture. My Target Language (English) is my native language. English was always my strongest subject and I have always had an affinity for language and talent in particular for my own language. This culminated with my degree in (English & Comparative) Linguistics which was a natural step for me and represented the apex of my English language education and accreditation.
Rates/Currency
I offer fair and competitive rates for my language pair. I don’t list my rates on my profile as rates tend to vary on a case-by-case basis due to a variety of considerations:
• Type of document
• Complexity of subject matter
• Turnaround window (rush jobs etc.)
My preferred payment method is by Paypal or Bank transfer (Visa). However, I may accept alternative payment methods if required. Whilst my preferred currency is GBP(British Pounds), I also accept USD (US Dollars), EUR (Euros), ILS (Israeli Shekels)...although other currencies are possible.
Policy on “Rush Jobs”
A “rush job” is defined as any project which would require me to translate an average of 4000 words or more per day to meet the deadline or any project which is awarded to me last minute with an imminent deadline. Whilst I do like to challenge myself as a translator, all rush jobs will be subject to certain restrictions:
• The added stress/inconvenience may be reflected in the rate negotiation.
• Issues of Priority: a rush job may not automatically gain precedence over any existing projects.
• Quality remains the primary concern, if quality is likely to be compromised for the sake of a (perhaps unrealistic) deadline, then the job shall not be accepted.
Ethics / Professional Integrity
All client details, data, information and source texts shall be handled with the upmost integrity and I am guided by the following principles:
• All sensitive information shall remain strictly confidential unless otherwise stipulated.
• No information shall be communicated or disclosed, in whole or in part, to any third party.
• The information supplied by the client shall not be used, either directly or indirectly, for any purpose other than in accordance with the translation remit.
• No liability whatsoever shall be accepted for unencrypted data sent over unsecured channels.
I am willing, in principle, to sign any non-disclosure agreement (NDA) that the client wishes to impose.
My U.S.P (Unique Selling Point)
I am one of only a handful of Hebrew > English translators who truly have English as a native language (the majority being Israelis with English as a second language), even fewer can match my linguistic academic background.
