French to English: Economics - World Economic General field: Bus/Financial Detailed field: Economics
Translation - English World economic expansion started to accelerate at the beginning of 2006. By the first quarter, growth in the US economy had reached 5.6 %, in large part due to a more sustained demand from household consumption. Following a difficult fourth quarter in Europe, the beginning of 2006 was marked by a strengthening of household consumption, and economic growth for the second quarter was well above expectations. The Chinese economy benefitted from the dynamism of western economies which resulted in a strong increase in exports, and its economic growth exceeded 10 %. Even the strong increase in the price of crude during the first semester did not have a really negative impact on the economy. Following the acceleration in the growth of the world economy, interest rates moved upward with financial markets anticipating a continuation of the policy of rising interest rates set by central banks in the US and Europe. This increase in interest rates weakened the real estate market in the US in the second quarter. Growth in the US economy then fell to 2.6 %, and then to 2 % in the third.
This fall in the US economy affected world growth in the second semester. Japanese economic growth contracted as a result of the negative effect that the very weak increase in wages had on household consumption. In Europe, economic activity remained flourishing. The slowing down of the world economy resulted in a strong decline of world interest rates during the third quarter. The pause observed by the Federal Reserve Board in August strengthened confidence. The trend in decreasing interest rates, and the strong fall in the price of crude during the second semester of the year contributed to a sustained performance of international stock markets during this period.
