Translation - English Venice
The famous water city, located on Italy’s north-east Adriatic coast, was a vassal state of the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire) from the 5th to the 10th century.
In 1381, after the defeat of Genoa, Venice became Europe’s most important maritime power on the Mediterranean Sea for trade with Asia.
In the 16th century Venice declined, and in 1797 was ceded to Austria.
In 1866 it became part of Italy.
