Source text - Spanish El viejo se despierta, como siempre, antes de amanecer. Allí se levantaría en seguida, para su ronda matinal: pisar la tierra húmeda todavía del relente nocturno, respirar aire recién nacido, ver ensancharse la aurora por el cielo, escuchar los pájaros... Allí sí, pero aquí...
«A estas horas estará levantándose Rosetta... Mucho llorar ayer despidiendo a su padre, pero ya la habrá consolado el sinvergüenza del marido. ¡Bragazas de Nino, más falso que oro de gitano! ¿Qué vería en él mi hija para enamorarse como una tonta? ¡Mujeres, mujeres!... Menos mal que no han tenido hijos; les harían desgraciados. Pocos me dio mi Rosa; ser raza de ricos no la hizo buena paridora. Abortos, sí; cada año, pero logrados sólo tres, y el Francesco para nada, allá vive perdido en Nueva York. Sólo tengo este hijo de Renato, este chiquitín, ¿cómo se llamará? Mandaron la estampa del bautizo, claro, pero no estaba yo para acordarme, en pleno pleito por el Soto Grande con el Cantanotte... Seguro que Maurizio, Giancarlo, un nombre así, de señorito, al gusto de la Andrea... Bueno, al menos ha sido ella capaz de darme un nieto, mientras que el Nino...»
Por el pasillo le llega un llanto infantil, como si lo hubieran suscitado sus pensamien tos. No suena irritado ni plañidero, sino rítmico, tranquilo: afirma una existencia. «Me gusta —piensa el viejo—, así lloraría yo si alguna vez llorase... ¿Esos pasos, la Andrea?... No, canturrea otra voz; es Renato... ¡Qué cosa!, todos los viejos se vuelven sordos, pero a mí se me afina el oído; valgo ahora más para escucha que cuando me tocaba de avanzadil la en la partida... Renato de niñero, ¡qué vergüenza! En este Milán los hombres no tienen lo que hay que tener, y Andrea me lo ha hecho milanés.»
La bicha; removiéndosele dentro, le apacigua. «Tienes razón, Rusca, ya todo da igual... Tienes hambre, sí, ¡paciencia! ¡Cómo hincaba el diente la otra Rusca, la difunta! Cuando vuelva Renato a su alcoba iré a echarnos comida a los dos; a lo mejor por ham bre llora el crío, ¡ya podía levantarse la Andrea a darle lo suyo! Biberón, claro; otra cosa no tiene esa mujer.»
Cesa el llanto y oye a Renato volverse a la cama. El viejo se levanta, se pone el pan talón y pasa a la cocina. No enciende para no delatarse, le basta el difuso claror callejero. Abre el armario: en su despensa del pueblo le asaltaba una ráfaga de olores, cebolla y salami, aceite y ajos. Aquí, ninguno; todo son frascos, latas, cajas con etiquetas de colorines, algunas en inglés. Coge un paquete cuyo rótulo promete arroz, pero dentro apare cen unos granos huecos, medio tostados e insípidos.
En el frigorífico, el queso es un trozo amarillento, blando y sin sabor apenas; menos mal que puede mezclarlo con unos trocitos de cebolla encontrada en una caja hermética de plástico... El vino, toscano, y para colmo helado... Por todo pan, uno de fábrica: panet to... ¡Si al menos pudiera meter mano a una buena hogaza de verdad, del horno de Mario! ¡Qué sopas de leche!... Y eso negro en el cilindro transparente de ese chisme segu ramente será café, pero ¿cómo se hace para calentarlo?
Alarma súbita: un despertador en la alcoba. La casa se anima y aparece Renato dando en voz baja los buenos días. Acciona el aparato del café y saca otro artefacto del armario, lo enchufa y pone a tostar dos trozos cuadrados de panetto. Escapa al baño y se oye cor rer el agua. Aparece Andrea y exclama destempladamente:
—Pero, ¡papá! ¿Qué hace levantado tan temprano?
Sale sin esperar respuesta y tropieza en el pasillo con su marido, susurrándose palabras uno a otro. Se multiplican los ruidos: grifos abiertos, gorgoteo en sumideros, choquecitos de frascos, ronroneo de afeitadora, la ducha... Luego el matrimonio en la cocina, estor bándose ambos al prepararse los desayunos. El viejo acepta una taza de ese café aguado y pasa al baño a lavotearse. A poco entra Renato:
—¡Padre, que tenemos agua caliente central!
—No quiero agua caliente. No aviva.
Renuncia a explicar al hijo que la fría le habla de regatos en la montaña, olor a hoguera recién encendida, visión de cabras ramoneando unas matas aún blancas de la escarcha. Entre tanto, los hijos van y vienen cautelosos desde la alcoba a la cocina, vistiéndose mientras muerden las tostadas salidas del aparato.
—Venga a ver al niño, padre. Vamos a cambiarle y a darle de comer.
«¿Será que dan leche los pezones de Andrea?», se extraña el viejo, pues no les ha visto preparar biberón.
Burlonamente intrigado sigue a Renato hasta la alcobita donde Andrea, sobre una mesa con muletón, concluye de cambiar al pequeño.
Atónito queda el viejo. Paralizado por la sorpresa. Nada de recién nacido, sino un niño ya capaz de estar sentado. Un niño que, intrigado a su vez por la aparición de ese hom bre, rechaza con su manita la cucharada de papilla ofrecida por la madre y clava en el viejo sus redondos ojos oscuros. Suelta un gruñidito, manotea un momento y, al fin, se digna abrir la boquita a la comida.
—¡Qué grande! —acaba por exclamar el viejo.
—¿Verdad, papá? —se ufana la madre—. ¡Y solamente tiene trece meses!
«¡Trece meses ya! —piensa el viejo, sin rehacerse aún de la sorpresa...—. Mi nieto, mi san gre, ahí, de pronto... ¿Cómo no lo supe antes?... ¡Está hermoso, ya lo creo!... ¿Por qué me mira tan serio, por qué manotea? ¿Qué querrá decirme?... ¿Fueron así mis hijos, este Renato y los otros?... ¡Ahora sonríe: qué carita de sinvergüenza!»
—Mira a tu abuelo, Brunettino; ha venido a conocerte.
—¿Brunettino? —exclama el viejo, otra vez sobrecogido por el asombro, llevándose la mano a su bolsita del cuello, única explicación posible del milagro—. ¿Por qué le habéis puesto Brunettino, por qué?
Le miran extrañados, mientras el niño suelta una risita. Renato lo interpreta mal y se disculpa:
—Perdone, padre; ya sé que al primero se le pone siempre el nombre del abuelo y yo quería Salvatore, como usted; pero Andrea tuvo la idea y se empeñó el padrino, mi compañero Renzo, porque Bruno es más firme, más serio... Perdone, lo siento.
El viejo le ataja, impulsivo, estrangulada la voz:
—¡Qué sentir ni qué perdón! ¡Pero si estoy gozando; le habéis puesto mi nombre!
Andrea le mira, atónita.
—Tú tenías que saberlo, Renato, que los partisanos me llamaban Bruno. ¿No te lo ha contado Ambrosio muchas veces?
—Sí, pero el nombre suyo es Salvatore.
—¡Tonterías! Salvatore me lo pusieron, quien fuera; Bruno me lo hice yo, es mío... ¡Brunettino! —concluye el viejo, susurrando, paladeando el diminutivo y pensando en la fuerza de su buena estrella, que inspiró la decisión de Andrea. Hasta le parece, mirando esos ojitos ahora pícaros, como si el niño lo comprendiera todo. ¿Y por qué no? ¡Todo es posible cuando sopla el buen viento de la suerte!
Tímidamente avanza un dedo hacia la mejilla infantil. No recuerda haber tocado jamás la piel de un niño tan pequeño. Si acaso cogió alguna vez a los suyos un momen to, bien vestiditos, para mostrarlos a los amigos.
El puñito ligero, ávido como un polluelo de águila en el nido, apresa el dedo rugoso y pretende llevárselo a la boca. El viejo sonríe deleitosamente: «¡Qué fuerza tiene este ban dido!». Le asombra descubrir que el niño posee músculos y nervios. ¡Cuántas sorpresas da el mundo!
Su dedo queda libre. El niño, atraído por el viejo, esquiva las cucharadas.
—Anda, tesoro, come un poquito más —pide la madre, mirando su reloj—. Por el abueli to.
Hoy es mañana de asombros: ¡resulta que Andrea consigue una entonación cariñosa! Pero el niño ladea enérgicamente la cabecita. De repente vomita una bocanada blancuz ca.
—¿Está enfermo? —se alarma el viejo.
—Padre, por favor... —ríe Renato—. Es aire, un regüeldito. ¿Ve?, ya vuelve a comer... ¡Como si usted no hubiese tenido hijos!
«No, no los he tenido —comprende el viejo, advirtiendo que nunca ha vivido lo que está viviendo—. En el pueblo los hombres no tenemos hijos. Tenemos recién nacidos, para pre sumir de ellos en el bautizo, sobre todo si son machos, pero luego desaparecen entre las mujeres... Aunque duerman en nuestra alcoba y lloren: eso es sólo para la madre... Luego sólo se notan como un estorbo si gatean por la casa, pero no cuentan hasta que no les vemos llevar el asno del ramal a darle agua o echar pienso en el corral a las gallinas: entonces es cuando empezamos a quererles si no se asustan del burro ni del gallo... Y las hijas, aún peor: no le nacen a uno hasta que empiezan a manchar cada mes y hay que andar con cien ojos para guardarles la honra... Así que tú eres el primer hijo, Brunettino, todos pendientes de ti, hasta tus padres olvidan sus prisas...»
—¿Quiere cogerle?
¿Así, de pronto?
Antes de que el viejo pueda prepararse ya tiene en sus brazos ese peso tan ligero, pero tan difícil de sostener. «Madonna, ¿cómo se sujeta esto?»
—Levántele más; así (le colocan bien al niño). ¡Ahueque los brazos, hombre! (se siente torpísimo)... La cabecita sobre el hombro de usted... (como en un baile agarrao, mejilla contra mejilla). Así echará el aire; y esta toalla sobre su chaqueta para que no le manche... Sin llorar, tesoro; es tu abuelito y te quiere mucho... Muévase adelante y atrás, padre... Eso, así, ¿ve cómo se calla?
El viejo se balancea cautelosamente. Andrea ha desaparecido. Renato se marcha —les vuelve la prisa—y el viejo se siente desconcertado como nunca, preguntándose qué emo ción le posee... Por fortuna no le ve nadie del pueblo y no podrán reírse de él, pero ¿qué hace un hombre solo en tales casos?
Acerca su mejilla a la del niño, pero éste retira la suya, aunque ha bastado el contacto para conocer una piel más suave que la de mujer. ¡Y ese olor inefable envolviendo al viejo: blando, lechoso, tibio, con un punto agridulce de fermentación vital, como huelen de lejos los lagares! Olor tenue, dulzón y, sin embargo, ¡tan embriagante y posesivo!
El viejo se sorprende a sí mismo estrujando contra su pecho el cuerpecillo cálido y, asustado, afloja el abrazo por temor a ahogarle, para volver a estrecharlo en el acto, no se le vaya a caer... Este corderillo no tiembla, pero pesa como el Niño Jesús sobre san Cristóbal, uno de los pocos santos que le caen bien al viejo, porque era grande y fuerte y pasaba los ríos.
De pronto el niño da una patadita contra el vientre del abuelo, llenándole de un pasmo supersticioso, porque es el punto justo donde le muerde la bicha. ¿También comprende eso el niño? Gira rápido la cabeza para escrutar la carita y vuelve a rozar así la mejilla infantil, provocando gemidos de protesta que le descomponen más todavía.
—Es su barba, señor —dice una voz desconocida, mientras dos manos le alivian del tier no peso—. Soy Anunziata, la asistenta. Los señores acaban de marcharse.
La mujer acomoda diestramente al niño en su cunita.
—Tiene sueño; se dormirá pronto... Con su permiso, voy a continuar la limpieza.
Al viejo le sorprende algo... ¡Eso es! ¿Cómo no lo advirtió antes?
—¿Duerme ahí el niño? —y, ante el mudo asentimiento, insiste—: ¿También por las noches?... Pero —explota indignado—¿es que aquí en Milán estos niños tan pequeños no duermen con sus padres? ¿Quién les cuida, entonces?
—Eso era antes; cuando yo servía de niñera. Ahora no; los médicos mandan que duer man solos.
—¡Qué barbaridad! ¿Y si lloran, y si les pasa algo?
—A esta edad ya no... Mire, mejor que la señora no cuida nadie a un niño. Lo mide, lo pesa, lo lleva al mejor doctor... ¡Y tiene un libro lleno de estampas que lo explica todo!
«¡Un libro! —piensa despreciativo el viejo, mientras la mujer sale del cuarto—. Si hicier an falta libros para eso, ¿cómo hubieran criado a sus hijos todas las buenas madres que no saben leer? Está claro: ¡por eso los crían mejor y no los echan lejos antes de tiempo!»
Ahora le llena de compasión el pequeño rostro adormilado, la manita aferrada al borde de la colcha con bruscos movimientos de inquietud... «¡Qué indefenso le dejan!» Pasa su propia mano sobre su mejilla y, en efecto, la barba le raspa.
«¡Pobrecillo, toda la noche solo! ¡Si todavía no habla!... ¿Y si no le oyen llorar? ¿Y si le da un cólico sin tener a nadie o un ahogo con la sábana? ¿Y si le muerde una rata o una culebra, como al mayor de Piccolitti? Bueno, aquí no hay culebras, no aguantan en Milán, pero ¡ocurren tantas cosas...! ¡Brujas, que estará esto lleno, y de mucho aojador malnacido...! ¡Pobre inocente abandonado!»
Clava los ojos en ese misterio dormido en su cuna. Después de tantos años, tres hijos en casa y sabe Dios cuántos en nidos ajenos, le acaba de nacer el primer niño... ¿Qué va a pasar ahora?
De repente Brunettino alza los párpados y lanza una mirada agudísima. «¿Me estaría sintiendo el pensamiento? Es una tontería, pero este niño...» Las dos bolitas oscuras intimidan al viejo, que se encoge como bajo el dedo del destino. Luego los párpados se cierran lentamente, mientras florece en la boquita una sonrisa. El niño, confiándose a ese hombre, se entrega por fin a un sueño tranquilo.
El viejo respira hondo. Vuelve a asombrarle que Andrea no lo supiera y que, sin embar go, entre tantos nombres, eligiera ése... Susurra:
—Así que te llamas Brunettino, que serás Bruno...
Al día siguiente el viejo se echa a la calle.
—¿Sabrá volver, papá? Recuerde: 82, viale Piave.
Ni contesta. ¿Le toma por un palurdo? ¡Antes se perdería ella en la montaña!
Llega al final de la calle. Una gran plaza con intenso tráfico. Al otro lado unos jar dines; por ahí no encontrará lo que busca. Retrocede dando rodeos por calles más pequeñas y prometedoras. Con sus hábitos de pastor se fija en detalles —escaparates, por tales, rótulos—para recordar el camino seguido, porque en Milán el sol no se asoma a ori entar a nadie. Al fin encuentra un barbero en una callecita. Via Rossini; nombre de buen agüero. Su táctica ha dado resultado.
¡Sí, sí, buen agüero! Todo lo contrario. Ya le pone en guardia la aparatosa instalación, y le dan mala espina la untuosa palabrería y la insistencia en ofrecerle cosméticos. Aunque los rechaza todos, al final del servicio le piden seis mil liras por un simple afeita do.
¡Seis mil liras! ¡Y sin las manos ni el pulso de Aldu en Roccasera que, por la cuarta parte, le pasa además la piedra de alumbre y le deja la cara como un jaspe todos los miércoles y sábados!
—Ahí van cinco mil y sobra —pronuncia secamente, arrojando el billete sobre el mostrador de los ungüentos—. No espero la vuelta por no seguir ni un minuto más entre ladrones. ¡Ni Fra Diávolo, que al menos se jugaba la vida!... ¿Alguien reclama?
—Oiga, caballero... —empieza el maestro. Pero se calla al ver al viejo echar mano al bolsillo con ademán resuelto.
—¡Déjele, jefe! —susurra un relamido joven con batín verde.
Hay un largo silencio en torno al viejo inmóvil, centro de miradas que chocan contra él y rebotan. Al fin, sale muy lentamente y se orienta hacia su casa. Por el camino adquiere una sencilla maquinita de hojas. Renato le ha ofrecido su afeitadora eléctrica, pero él sabe que algunos se electrocutan con eso en el cuarto de baño. Además, su maquinita no hace ruido y él quiere afeitarse a diario sin despertar a nadie.
¡Qué fracaso, la barbería! Claro, ya el día empezó mal. A solas con Renato desayunán dose, mientras Andrea se duchaba, le preguntó por qué no dormía el niño con ellos, como han dormido toda la vida. Renato sonrió, condescendiente:
—Ahora se les empieza a educar más pronto. Deben dormir solos en cuanto llegan a esta edad, padre. Para que no tengan complejos.
—¿Complejos? ¿Y eso qué es? ¿Algo contagioso de los mayores?
Renato, piadosamente, conserva su seriedad y se explica en palabras sencillas, al alcance de un campesino. En suma, hay que evitar su excesiva dependencia de los padres. El viejo le mira fijamente:
—¿De quién van a depender entonces? ¡Si todavía no anda, no habla, no se puede valer!
—De los padres, claro. Pero sin exagerar... Vamos, no se preocupe, padre; el niño está atendido como es debido, lo hemos estudiado bien Andrea y yo.
—Ya... En ese libro, claro.
—Por supuesto. Y, sobre todo, guiados por el médico... Es así, padre; no hay que provo car demasiado cariño a esa edad.
El viejo calla. ¿Cariño a medias? ¿Qué cariño será ése? ¿Controlado, reservándose?... No estalla porque, después de todo, ellos son los padres. Pero así es como empezó mal el día, se sintió cabreado toda la mañana y, claro, se desahogó ante el robo en la barbería.
Afortunadamente, otro establecimiento le reconcilia con el barrio. Está en la vía Salvini, otra callecita donde, al pasar, le atrae una modesta portada de ultramarinos. Además, acaba de entrar una mujer con aspecto de saber comprar. Todo promete una tienda como es debido.
En efecto, nada más entrar le envuelven los olores del país: quesos fuertes, aceitunas en orza, hierbas y especias, frutas al aire, sin envoltorios transparentes con letreros ni cartón moldeado para hacer peso... Y, por si todo fuera poco, ¡qué mujer detrás del mostrador, qué mujer!
Cuarentona, la buena edad. Fresca como sus manzanas. Se excusa con la clienta recién llegada, evidentemente de confianza, y sonríe al nuevo comprador, con los ojos vivaces más aún que con la boca glotona.
—¿El señor desea?
Y la voz. De verdadera stacca, de buena jaca.
—¿Deseo? ¡Todo! —sonríe a su vez, señalando alrededor.
Porque la tienda es un tesoro: contiene justo lo que busca y mucho más, que nunca vio en otros escaparates. Tienen hasta verdadero pan: redondo, bastones, roscas e incluso el especial para rellenar con el sofrito chorreante de salsa de tomate que rebosa al morder. Como dice el refrán de Catanzaro: «Con el morzeddhu1 comes, bebes y te lavas la cara».
La señora sale del mostrador para atenderle. Buenas caderas, sin gorduras. Pantorrillas a modo, pero el tobillo fino. Y ese acento emocionante, que le impulsa a preguntar:
—Usted es del Sur, ¿verdad, señora?
—Como usted. Y de Tarento.
—Bueno, yo soy de junto a Catanzaro. Roccasera, en la montaña.
—¡Es igual! —ríe ella—. Apulia y Calabria, ¿eh?, ¡como éste y éste!
Empareja expresivamente los índices de cada mano, mientras insinúa un guiño. Ese gesto que acopla a ambas regiones parece unirles también a ellos dos en una equívoca complicidad.
El viejo escoge vituallas con calma, discute calidades y precios. Ella le atiende sigu iéndole las bromas, pero sin darle confianzas excesivas, y le mira intrigada hasta que no puede callar:
—¿Cómo hace usted la compra? ¿Vive solo?
—¡No, vivo con mi nieto!... ¡Bueno, y sus padres!
Ha añadido vivamente la segunda frase y vuelve a pensar esas cuatro palabras —«Vivo con mi nieto»— jamás pronunciadas antes. «Cierto —se asombra—, es mi nieto. Soy su nonnu».
—Será bien guapo el chiquillo —adula ella, mirándole, calibrándole.
«¿Guapo? ¿Es guapo Brunettino?... ¡Preocupación de mujer! Brunettino es otra cosa. Brunettino es... el niño. Y ya está.»
—Vaya... —contesta evasivo, mientras piensa: «Ésta sabe vender. Si me descuido me colo ca lo que quiera, pero trabajo le mando. A mí no me engatusa nadie... Bueno, es lo suyo; vive de la gente».
Recuerda a la mujer de Beppo, en el café, despachando bebidas, siempre rozagante con su buen buche. «Tú vendes con las tetas de tu mujer», dicen al marido los de confianza y él finge cabrearse para seguir la broma, porque su Giulietta es muy honrada y todos lo saben: la frase va sin mala intención. Además es verdad; el hombre ha tenido esa suerte como otros tienen otra. Pero esta mujer de la tienda es más fina. Fina, sí, ¡qué manos empaquetando y dando el cambio!
«¿Será tan honrada? —duda el viejo, que en eso siempre acierta—. Aquí en la ciudad es otra vida...» Pero le aflora en la mente otro tema obsesivo e interroga de pronto:
—Dispense mi pregunta, señora, pero es por mi nieto: ¿hasta qué tiempo han dormido con ustedes sus hijos pequeños?
—¡Ay, no hemos tenido hijos!... Dios no nos mandó ninguno.
«¿En qué estaría pensando Dios teniendo a mano esta hembra?», cavila el viejo mien tras se disculpa, confuso. Ella quita importancia, comprendiendo... Y, para cortar el silencio, cambia de tema:
—Siento no poderle mandar su paquete a casa. Tenemos un chico para eso, pero hoy está enfermo. Y mi marido ha salido a reponer el género.
Una mujer con detalles: sabiendo que no está bien en el hombre llevar paquetes por la calle. El viejo se despide:
—Adiós, señora..., señora...
—Maddalena, para servirle. Pero ¡nada de adiós! ¡A rivederci! Porque volverá usted, ¿verdad? Aquí tenemos de todo.
—¿Quién no volvería para verla?... Seguro, a rivederci.
Ya en la calle, aún le dura la sonrisa al viejo. Pero «¿cómo no habrá tenido hijos esa mujer, con tales carnes y del Sur?... En fin, no es cosa mía y da gusto tratarla. Además, la tienda es mi solución. De todo y a precios decentes. Desde ahora, siempre me amanecerá como Dios manda».
Lo tenía decidido desde que Andrea le retiró del armario su queso de cabra y su cebol la para el desayuno —«Jesús, papá, apesta el cuarto», exclamó ella—pretendiendo sepul tarlo en las cajitas como ataúdes del frigorífico. Esconderá sus vituallas en los bajos del sofá-cama, entre los hierros de la complicada armadura, metidas en bolsas de plástico por el olor, que además ayudará a ocultar el cigarrillo, pues Andrea se resigna a que fume donde no anda el niño. Por suerte, de olfato andan muy mal su nuera y la asistenta. Se comprende: la vida milanesa mata los sentidos.
De modo que, a partir de ahora, se desayunará como los hombres, con olores y sabores de verdad, partidos con su navaja sobre auténtico pan y remojados en el buen tinto rascagaznates que Andrea no ha encontrado pretexto para rechazar en la cocina.
«Al menos por la mañana me libraré del panetto, de sus pastas preparadas para reca lentar, de sus congelados y de todas las porquerías de fábrica... ¡Tú y yo, Rusca, comer emos siquiera una vez al día lo bueno de la tierra!»
Se sienta en un banco de la gran plaza y empieza a liar un cigarrillo para fumar fuera de casa. Algún transeúnte le mira con curiosidad. Al ir a pasar la lengua sobre el borde engomado del papel un pensamiento le detiene la mano en el aire:
«¡Pues puede que en esto lleve la razón Andrea y que no le siente bien el humo al niño...! ¿Tú qué dices, Rusca? El caso es que a ti te calma, pero el médico dice que a mí no me conviene. Y ahora, además del Cantanotte, necesito durar por Brunettino... Reconócelo, Rusca, el humo no es bueno para él, aunque sólo fumemos en mi cuarto.»
Moja el papel, pega el cigarrillo y lo enciende con un fósforo. Aspira parsimoniosa mente, pero no le sabe como siempre. Se siente culpable fumando: es una traición a Brunettino.
Es un sacrificio ir suprimiendo el tabaco, pero en cambio son un gozo sus desayunos clandestinos, sobre todo el de tres días más tarde, cuando no debería comer nada. Le van a sacar sangre a las nueve para el análisis prescrito por el famoso doctor, a cuya consul ta le llevó Andrea la víspera. Prescrito, en realidad, por la ayudante aquella o lo que fuese —tan gorda como Andrea es delgada, pero hablando lo mismo—, pues, tras mucha recep ción organizada, espera, pasillos y otros ritos preliminares, no llegaron a penetrar en el santuario del médico. El viejo ríe, pensando cómo le va a gustar a Andrea, cuando se lev ante y aparezca en la cocina, ver con qué docilidad se abstiene de comer nada.
«Eso de ayunar antes de los análisis —piensa mientras paladea su requesón con cebolla y aceitunas—son tonterías de los médicos. Teatro para cobrar más. Análisis, ¿para qué? De todos modos va a resultar malo, ¿verdad, Rusca? ¡Ya te encargarás tú!»
La sangre no la extraen en la consulta del famoso, sino en el Hospital Mayor. Le lleva Renato en su coche; tiene tiempo y le coge de paso hacia la fábrica, en la zona industri al de Bovisa. Aparca, entran y le guía por los corredores y ventanillas de la burocracia hospitalaria hasta la misma sala de espera, donde le repite una vez más sus instrucciones:
—Ya sabe, padre, a la salida tome un taxi en la misma puerta para volver a casa.
El padre escucha atento, pero su sonrisa se hace desdeñosa cuando Renato se aleja. «A estos muchachos de ahora me hubiera gustado verles durante la guerra, huyendo de los tudescos por una ciudad desconocida... ¡Tomar un taxi: en eso estoy pensando! ¡Lo menos diez mil liras!»
La señora Maddalena le explicó la víspera —esa mujer lo soluciona todo— que el auto bús 51 pasa ante el Hospital y tiene parada en el piazzale Biancamano desde donde, por la via Moscova y los jardines llegará derecho a su casa. Por eso hace oídos sordos a Renato y por eso otro paciente de su edad, que se ha dado cuenta de todo, le mira luego con ojos cómplices.
El viejo, por su gusto, se marcharía sin pincharse, pero el famoso doctor exigirá el análisis para seguir la rutina. «Rutina y comedia, eso es lo que me cabrea... ¿Me creen un viejo chocho? ¿Piensan que he venido a curarme? ¡Desgraciados! Si no fuera porque el hijoputa del Cantanotte todavía respira, ¡maldita sea!, cualquier día hubiera yo con sentido en salir del pueblo, donde acabaría a gusto en mi cama, entre los amigos y con mi montaña a la vista, la Femminamorta tranquila bajo el sol y las nubes.»
Porque el Cantanotte respira, aunque ya no se tiene de pie, inmovilizado hasta la cin tura por la parálisis. Pero sigue resollando, con sus gafas negras de fascista de toda la vida. El viejo hubo de afrontar esa visión el día de su marcha, porque el muy perro se hizo bajar a la plaza en un sillón por sus dos hijos, tan pronto alboreó. Allí se juntó con un grupo de aduladores, dándole conversación a la puerta del Casino, mientras llegaba el momento de disfrutar del gran espectáculo.
El gran espectáculo, el adiós del viejo, que ahora lo revive mientras aguarda que le llame la enfermera. La plaza, como en una amarillenta fotografía y, en su centro, el coche de Renato rodeado de chiquillos. Acota su desnivelado suelo un cuadrilátero irregular de fachadas expectantes cuyas puertas y ventanas, aún pareciendo cerradas, son implacables observatorios de la vida local y acechan aquel día el mutis final del viejo Salvatore. Especialmente enfrentados, como siempre, los dos lados mayores del rectángulo: el de la iglesia y el Casino, presidido por el Cantanotte, y el del café de Beppo con el Municipio, territorio del viejo y sus camaradas, con la vivienda del propio Salvatore, heredada del suegro, junto al café.
La luz matinal iba afirmándose mientras el viejo procuraba ganar tiempo, con la loca esperanza de que la parálisis del enemigo le subiera de pronto como espuma de gaseosa, hasta ahogar el odiado corazón; pero en vano tocaba su bolsita de amuletos por encima de la camisa, pidiendo ese milagro. El viejo había cogido ya su manta y su navaja, porfi aba con su hija sobre si se llevaba también la lupara, el antiguo retaco que fue su primera arma de fuego, su investidura de hombre. Renato se impacientaba al recordar el encargo de Andrea en Roma que les retrasaría. Cuando estaba a punto de asomar el sol ya no aguantó más:
—Padre, ¿no será mejor que acerque el coche por detrás a la puerta del corral y salg amos de una vez?
La infamante proposición decidió al viejo, que fulminó a su hijo con la mirada. Dejó la lupara, besó a Rosetta, dirigió al yerno un vago gesto de la mano y decidió violento:
—¡Nos vamos, pero por la puerta grande! Y tú, Rosetta, como llores desde el balcón vuelvo a subir y te planto dos hostias. Si no puedes aguantarte, no te asomes.
El viejo bajó una vez más la escalera haciendo sonar sus pisadas de amo y emergió, más erguido que nunca, de las sombras del zaguán. Sus amigos acudieron desde el café, portándose como los hombres que eran: todo fueron sonrisas y proyectos para cuando Salvatore regresara curado. Renato se instaló al volante, aguardando impaciente.
Al fin el viejo se desprendió de su gente y se dirigió solo hacia el coche, lo que le aprox imó al Casino. Avanzó mirando fijamente al sentado enemigo, a los dos hijos de pie junto al sillón, al sombrío grupo de secuaces.
—¡Adiós, Salvatore! —disparó entonces con sorna la cascada boca bajo las gafas negras.
El viejo se clavó en el suelo. Bien plantado, ligeramente separadas las piernas, dis puestos los brazos.
—¿Todavía puedes hablar, Domenico? —respondió con firme voz—. Mucho tiempo ya que ni rechistabas.
—Ya ves. Los que tenemos vida tenemos palabras.
—Pues entonces estabas muerto cuando le corté el rabo a tu perro Nostero, ¡porque no graznaste!
—Ya hablé por delante al matarte a tu Rusca. ¡Buena conejera, sí, señor! —repuso el par alítico, haciendo reír a sus adictos.
—¡Y también estabas muerto cuando deshonré a tu sobrina Concetta! ¡Muerto y podri do, como ahora! —escupió furioso el viejo, aferrando ya la navaja dentro de su bolsillo. En aquel momento deseó acabar allí de una vez: morir llevándose al otro por delante.
El súbito silencio de la plaza podía cortarse en el aire. Pero el Cantanotte había puesto a tiempo las manos sobre los antebrazos, ya nerviosos, de sus dos hijos. Y concluyó diciendo, con despectivo gesto de la gorda mano anillada:
—El tiempo le reparó la honra... Mejor de lo que los médicos te podrán arreglar a ti... ¡Anda, anda, buen viaje!
No hubo más.
«Todo está dicho —pensó el viejo en un relámpago—. Aquí todos lo sabemos todo. Que la Concetta casó por su dinero con un estraperlista de guerra y es ahora una señorona en Catanzaro. Que mi viaje acaba en el cementerio y el suyo no tardará en lo mismo. Que yo aún tengo tiempo de clavarle la navaja y sentirle morir debajo mientras sus hijos me apuñalan... ¿Para qué? Todo está dicho.»
Además, la pasividad del otro bando ante su desafío le dio derecho a subir digna y lentamente a su coche, cuya arrancada despidió una nube de polvo hacia los Cantanotte.
—Bien hecho, Renato —felicitó el viejo, satisfecho—. Y me gusta que te apearas por si acaso, pero yo me bastaba frente a esa mala raza.
Sin embargo, algo no estaba en orden y le entristecía: la inexplicable ausencia de Ambrosio entre quienes le despidieron. Ninguno supo darle razón del partisano fraternal que le sacó de las aguas del Crati, donde se estaba desangrando, cuando el golpe de mano contra los alemanes de Monte Casiglio.
Pero Ambrosio estaba en su puesto, ¿cómo no había de estar? En el primer recodo monte abajo, junto al olmo de la ermita, esperando con su sempiterna ramita verde en la boca. El viejo hizo parar el coche y se apeó, exclamando alegremente:
—¡Hermano!... ¡Vaya con el Ambrosio!... ¿También tú vienes como todos a pregun tarme por qué me marcho?
—¿Cuándo he sido yo tonto? —replicó Ambrosio con fingida indignación—. ¡Está claro! ¡No quieres que el Cantanotte vaya a tu entierro, si es que tienes esa mala fortuna! —añadió, haciendo la cuerna contra el mal de ojo con la mano izquierda.
Estallaron en una risotada.
—Ahora —añadió gravemente Ambrosio—tienes que aguantar para darte el gusto de acompañarle tú en el suyo. Y después, ¡hasta te invito al mío!
Compuso su acostumbrada mueca de payaso —su famoso tic, en pleno combate— y remachó:
—Aguanta como entonces, Bruno; ya sabes.
—Se hará lo que se pueda—prometió el viejo—. Como entonces.
En un súbito impulso se abrazaron, se abrazaron, se abrazaron. Metiendo cada uno en su pecho el del otro hasta besarse con los corazones. Se sintieron latir, se soltaron y, sin más palabras, el viejo subió al coche. Las dos miradas se abrazaron aún, a través del cristal, mientras Renato arrancaba.
Ambrosio levantó el puño y empezó a entonar para el viejo la vibrante marcha de los partisanos, mientras su figura se iba quedando atrás.
Cuando la escamoteó una curva, todavía en el pecho del viejo seguían cantando vic toriosas las palabras de lucha y esperanza.
¡Nieva!
El viejo salta de la cama ilusionado como un niño: en su tierra la nieve es maravilla y juego, promesa de rico pasto y gordas reses. Al ver caer los copos se asoma a la ventana, pero en el fondo del patio no hay blancura. La ciudad la corrompe, como a todo, con virtiéndola en charcos embarrados. Se le ocurre no salir, pero cambia de idea: quizás en los jardines haya cuajado la nevada. Además, así se libra de Anunziata, que hoy viene antes porque Andrea tiene clases temprano.
No es que se entienda mal con ella; es que Anunziata es maniática de la limpieza y su invasión sucesiva de las habitaciones recuerda a los alemanes: ¡hasta lleva su aspiradora por delante como un tanque! El viejo se repliega de cuarto en cuarto, retirando además sus provisiones secretas del escondite bajo el diván-cama, mientras le limpian su habitación. Para colmo, ella no deja las cosas como estaban, sino que las reordena a su gusto. Menos mal que habla poco; prefiere escuchar al transistor que lleva a todas partes.
«¡Y cuántas tonterías suelta ese aparato! —piensa el viejo mientras ve caer la nieve por la ventana de la alcobita con el niño dormido—. Por fortuna apenas se entienden, en ese italiano del gobierno. Claro, el mismo de la televisión, allá en el café de Beppo, pero con la pantalla no importa, porque se comprenden las cosas viendo a los explicadores.»
Lo peor de Anunziata, sin embargo, es su solapada vigilancia para apartar al abuelo del niño. El viejo sospecha advertencias de Andrea contra posibles contagios de un enfer mo que, además, es fumador. «¡Pero si cada día fumo menos! —se indigna—. Bien está que al niño dormido no se le despierte, pero ahora que ya empieza a moverse y manotear abriendo esos ojitos de zorrillo...»
—¡No le coja, señor Roncone! —advierte Anunziata, apareciendo de repente en la puer ta—. A la señora no le gusta.
—¿Por qué? ¡La vejez no se contagia!
—¡Señor, qué cosas dice usted! Es que a los niños no hay que cogerles en brazos. Se acostumbran, ¿sabe? Lo dice el libro.
—¿Y a qué han de acostumbrarse? ¿A que nadie les toque?... ¡Libros! ¿Sabe usted por dónde me los paso? ¡Justo, señora, por ahí mismo!... ¡Libros! ¡Hasta a los cabritillos, que van solos a la teta apenas nacen, les lame la madre todo el día, y son animales!
—Yo hablo como me mandan —se retira muy digna la mujer.
El niño se acurruca en esos brazos y, riendo, procura asir los crespos cabellos grises. El viejo estrecha esa vida palpitante toda latido a flor de piel.
Los primeros días temía deformar esas carnecillas; ahora sabe que el niño no es tan blando. Diminuto, sí; menesteroso de ayuda, también; pero exigente, imperioso. ¡Cuánta energía cuando, de repente, estalla en gritos agudísimos, patalea y bracea violentamente! Asombra esa voluntad total, esa determinación oscura, esa condensación de vida.
Así el viejo, de zagalillo, cogía en brazos a su Lambrino; pero el comportamiento de aquel corderillo preferido nunca ofrecía imprevistos. El niño, por el contrario, sorprende a cada instante; es un perpetuo misterio. ¿Por qué rechaza hoy lo que apeteció ayer? ¿Por qué le interesa ahora lo desdeñado antes? Todo lo investiga y curiosea: lo palpa, da vueltas al objeto en sus manitas, se lo lleva a la boca, tienta su resistencia, huele... Olfatea, sobre todo, como un perrito, ¡y con qué intensa fruición!
El niño siempre anda buscando. Entonces, si no se siente buscado, por fuerza pensará que el mundo falla y le rechaza. Por eso el viejo le abraza tiernamente, le besa, le huele con tanta avidez animal como olfatea el propio niño, identificándose así con él. «¡Mira que necesitar libros para criarle!... ¡Así no se enseña a vivir, sino con las manos y con los besos, con la carne y los gritos...! ¡Y tocando, tocando!... Mira, niño mío, yo abrazaba al Lambrino igual que me achuchaba mi madre; yo aprendí a pegar según me pegaban, ¡y me pegaron bien!...» Sonríe, evocando otro aprendizaje: «Y luego acaricié como me acariciaban y ¡tuve buenas maestras! También tú acabarás acariciando, de eso me encar go yo».
La manita que escarba en su pelo le hace daño con un súbito tirón voluntarioso y el viejo ríe gozoso:
«Eso, así, ¿ves cómo aprendes? Así, a golpes y a caricias... Así somos los hombres: duros y amantes... ¿Sabes lo que repetía el Torlonio? Esto: La mejor vida, Bruno, andar a cuchilladas por una hembra.»
Percibe en el cuerpecito un atensamiento —«¡este niño comprende!»—que se le comuni ca y le estremece. No es capaz de pensarlo y menos de expresarlo, pero sí de vivir a fondo ese momento sin frontera entre ambas carnes, ese intercambio misterioso en que él recibe un renacido latir desde la verde ramita en sus brazos, mientras le infunde su seguridad de viejo tronco bien arraigado en la tierra eterna.
Translation - English The old man wakes up, as always, before sunrise. There he would get up straight away to do his morning rounds: to tread the earth still damp from the night dew, breathe the new-born air, see the dawn spread over the sky, listen to the birds… There, that is, but here…
“Rosetta will be getting up now… All that crying yesterday when she said goodbye to her father, but that excuse of a husband will have consoled her by now. That useless wimp Nino, he’s more fake than gypsies’ gold! What can my daughter have seen in him to make her fall in love like a fool? Women, women! At least they haven’t had children; they’d make them miserable. My Rosa didn’t give me many; being of wealthy stock didn’t make her good for childbirth. Miscarriages, yes; every year, but only three children, and Francesco doesn’t count, disappearing off to New York like that. I only have this son of Renato, this little boy, what’s his name? They sent his baptism script, of course, but I was in no state to remember, in the middle of my fight over Soto Grande with Cantanotte… Probably Maurizio, Giancarlo, some name like that, a proper little snob’s name, to Andrea’s liking…Well, at least she’s been able to give me a grandchild, unlike that Nino…”
From along the hallway the sound of a child crying reaches him, as if his thoughts had awoken it. It doesn’t sound angry or plaintive, but rhythmic, calm: it affirms an existence. “I like it,” thinks the old man, “that’s how I’d cry if I were ever to cry… Those footsteps – Andrea...? No, it’s a different voice singing softly; Renato… How about that? All other old people go deaf, but my hearing gets sharper; I hear better now than when I used to be sent out in the advance party…Renato looking after the baby, how embarrassing! Here in Milan men don’t have what they are supposed to have between their legs, and Andrea has turned him into a Milanese man on me.”
The snake, moving around inside him, calms him. “You’re right, Rusca, it doesn’t matter now… You’re hungry, I know - be patient! How the other Rusca, the one who died, used to sink her teeth in! When Renato goes back to his room I’ll go and get us both something to eat; maybe it’s hunger that’s made the child cry - Andrea could have got up to give him his milk! From a bottle, of course – that woman doesn’t have anything else.”
The crying stops and he hears Renato go back to bed. The old man gets up, puts his trousers on and goes through to the kitchen. He doesn’t turn the light on so as not to give himself away; the faint light from the street is enough for him. He opens the cupboard: in his larder back home he would be bombarded by a burst of smells; onions and salami, olive oil and garlic. Here, nothing; it’s all jars, tins, boxes with coloured labels, some in English. He picks up a packet whose label promises rice, but inside there are hollow, half-toasted, insipid grains.
In the fridge, the cheese is a yellowish, soft slab with barely any flavour; it’s a good job he can mix it with some bits of onion he found in a plastic airtight box. The wine, from Tuscany, and to make matters worse freezing…the only thing in the way of bread, a factory-made one: panetto…If only he could get his hands on a proper loaf, from Mario’s oven! The milk soups they used to make with that bread…! And that black stuff in the see-through cylinder of that contraption must be coffee, but how do you heat it up?
Sudden alert: an alarm clock in the bedroom. The house wakes up and Renato appears, saying good morning quietly. He turns the coffee machine on and takes another device from the cupboard, plugs it in and puts two square slices of panetto in it to toast. He escapes to the bathroom and the sound of water running can be heard. Andrea appears and exclaims exaggeratedly:
“Goodness, father – what are you doing up so early?”
She goes out without waiting for an answer and in the hallway bumps into her husband, and they whisper to each other. The noises multiply: running taps, gurgling drains, the clinking of glass, the hum of an electric razor, the shower…Then the couple in the kitchen, getting in each other’s way as they prepare their breakfasts. The old man accepts a cup of the watery coffee and goes into the bathroom to splash some water on his face. Not long after Renato comes in:
“Father – you know we have got hot water!”
“I don’t want hot water. It doesn’t make you feel alive.”
He doesn’t bother to explain to his son that cold water reminds him of mountain streams, the smell of recently-lit fires, the sight of goats browsing shrubs which are still white from the frost. Meanwhile the children go cautiously to and fro between the bedroom and the kitchen, getting dressed while they bite on the pieces of toast which have come out of the toaster.
“Come and see the child, father. We’re going to get him changed and feed him.”
“Can Andrea’s nipples actually give milk?” wonders the old man in surprise, as he has not seen them get a bottle ready.
Half smirking and half intrigued, he follows Renato to the nursery where Andrea, on a table with a towel cloth, is finishing changing the little boy.
The old man is astonished. Paralysed by surprise. This is no new-born baby, but a boy already able to sit up. A boy who, intrigued himself at the appearance of this man, waves away the spoon of baby food being offered by his mother and fixes the old man with his dark, round eyes. He lets out a little grunt, waves his hands around for a moment, and, finally, deigns to open his little mouth to the food.
“He’s so big!” the old man finally says.
“He is, isn’t he father?” says the mother with pride. “And he’s only thirteen months!”
“Thirteen months already!” thinks the old man, still trying to get over the surprise… “My grandson, my blood, there, suddenly… How did I not know before...? He certainly is handsome...! Why does he look at me so seriously? Why does he wave his hands around? What can he be trying to say to me…? Were my children like that, this Renato and the others…? Now he’s smiling – what a cheeky face!”
“Look at your grandfather, Brunettino; he has come to meet you.”
“Brunettino?” exclaims the old man, overcome with astonishment, lifting his hand to his neck pouch, the only possible explanation for the miracle. “Why have you called him Brunettino? Why?”
They look at him, surprised, while the child chuckles. Renato misunderstands and apologises:
“Forgive me, father; I know the first son is always named after his grandfather and I wanted Salvatore, like you; but Andrea had the idea and his godfather, my friend Renzo, insisted, because Bruno is more solid, more serious… Forgive me, I’m sorry.”
The old man stops him, choking on his voice:
“What are you saying sorry for? I’m happy; you’ve given him my name!”
Andrea looks at him, astonished.
“You should have known, Renato, that the partisans used to call me Bruno. Hasn’t Ambrosio told you many times?”
“Yes, but your name is Salvatore.”
“Rubbish! Salvatore was a name given to me by whoever; Bruno is what I became, it’s mine… Brunettino!” the old man finishes in a whisper, savouring the diminutive form and thanking his lucky stars, which inspired Andrea to make her decision. It even seems to him, looking at those eyes which have a cheeky look in them now, as if the boy understands everything. And why not? Anything is possible when the fair wind of good fortune blows!
He timidly moves a finger towards the child’s cheek. He doesn’t remember ever having touched the skin of such a small child. If he ever picked one of his up for a moment, it was to show them to his friends and they had all their little clothes on.
The light little fist, eager like an eagle chick in its nest, imprisons the rough finger and tries to take it to the child’s mouth. The old man smiles in delight: “How strong this rascal is!” He is amazed to discover that the boy has muscles and nerves. Life is so full of surprises!
His finger is freed. The boy, drawn to the old man, dodges the spoonfuls.
“Come on, treasure, eat a little bit more,” urges the mother, looking at her watch. “For granddad.”
This is a morning of surprises: it turns out that Andrea is able to produce an affectionate tone! But the boy moves his little head energetically from side to side. He suddenly throws up a mouthful of whitish vomit.
“Is he ill?” asks the old man, alarmed.
“Father, please…” laughs Renato. “It’s wind, a little burp. See? He’s eating again. As if you’ve never had children!”
“No, I’ve never had them,” realises the old man, seeing that he has never experienced what he is experiencing now. “In the village, men do not have children. We have newborn babies, to show off with them at their baptism, especially if they are boys, but then they disappear among the women. Then they are only noticed as a nuisance if they crawl through the house, but they do not really count until we see them take the donkey from its tether to give it water or throw feed in the yard for the chickens: it’s then that we start to love them, as long as they do not get frightened by the donkey or the cock… And daughters, even worse: they’re not born to you until they start to bleed every month and you have to walk around with a hundred pairs of eyes in your head to guard their honour… so you are the first child, Brunettino, with everyone devoted to you; even your parents stop dashing around…”
“Do you want to hold him?”
Just like that, so suddenly?
Before the old man can get himself ready he already has in his arms that weight, so light but so difficult to hold. “Jesus, how do you hold this?”
“Lift him up more; there (they arrange the boy better in his arms). Cup your arms man! (he feels extremely clumsy)… His little head on your shoulder (like in a close dance, cheek to cheek)… That way he can get his wind up; and this towel over your jacket so he doesn’t get you… Move forwards and backwards, father… That’s it, there you go, see how he’s calmed down?”
The old man rocks cautiously. Andrea has disappeared. Renato leaves – they are dashing about again – and the old man feels more disconcerted than ever, wondering what emotion has possessed him… Luckily nobody from the village can see him and they won’t be able to laugh at him, but what does a man alone do in these situations?
He brings his cheek up to the child’s, but the boy moves his away, although the contact was enough to experience a skin softer than a lady’s. And that indescribable smell enveloping the old man: soft, milky, warm, with a bittersweet hint of vital fermentation, like wine presses smell from a distance! A smell which is faint, sickly sweet but at the same time so intoxicating and possessive!
The old man surprises himself by squeezing the warm little body against his chest and, scared, relaxes his arm for fear of suffocating him, only to tense it again at once – he doesn’t want to drop him… This little lamb doesn’t tremble, but he weighs the same as baby Jesus on Saint Christopher, one of the few saints the old man likes, because he was big and strong and crossed rivers.
Suddenly the little boy kicks his grandfather in the stomach, making him flinch in surprise, because it is just where the snake bites him. Does the child understand that as well? He turns his head quickly to scrutinise the little face and in doing so brushes against the child’s cheek again, prompting whimpers of protest which unsettle him even more.
“It’s your beard sir,” says an unknown voice, while two hands relieve him of his tender burden. “I’m Anunziata, the maid. His parents have just left.”
The woman skillfully places the child in his cot.
“He’s tired; he’ll go to sleep soon… If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to carry on with the cleaning.”
The old man feels that something is not right… That’s it! How did he not notice before?
“Does the boy sleep there?” and on receiving a silent confirmation, he goes on: “At night as well…? But,” he explodes with indignation, “are you telling me that in Milan little children like him don’t sleep with their parents? Who looks after them then?”
“That was before, when I was a nanny. Not now; the doctors say they should sleep on their own.”
“How outrageous! What if they cry, or if something happens to them?”
“At this age, not any more… Look, nobody looks after their child better than his mother. She measures him, she weighs him, she takes him to the best doctor… And she has a book full of pictures that explains everything!”
“A book,” thinks the old man with disdain, while the woman leaves the room. “If books were needed for that, how must all the children of good mothers who can’t read have been brought up? It’s obvious: that’s why they bring them up better and don’t push them away too soon!”
Now he is filled with compassion for the small, sleeping face, the little hand clinging to the edge of the mattress and making sudden worried movements…”How defenceless they leave him!” He runs his own hand over his cheek and, indeed, his beard scratches him.
“Poor little thing, all night on his own! He can’t even talk yet...! And what if they don’t hear him cry? Or if he has colic with nobody there, or if he suffocates under his sheet? And if he gets bitten by a rat or a snake, like Piccolitti’s eldest? Well, there are no snakes here, they can’t survive in Milan, but so many things can happen…! Witches, which this place will be full of, and they’ll be the sort who cast particularly evil spells…! Poor abandoned, innocent boy!”
He fixes his eyes on that mystery sleeping in his cot. After so many years, three children at home and God knows how many in other nests, his first boy has just been born to him… What’s going to happen now?
Suddenly Brunettino lifts his eyelids and throws a very sharp look in his direction. Can he have been reading my thoughts? That’s ridiculous, but then this boy…” The two dark little balls intimidate the old man, who shrinks as if under the finger of destiny. Then the eyelids close slowly, while his mouth breaks out in a smile. The boy, trusting that man, finally gives himself up to calm rest.
The old man breathes deeply. He is surprised again that Andrea didn’t know and that, from so many names, she should choose that one… He whispers:
“So, you’re called Brunettino, and will be Bruno…”
The next day the old man goes out.
“Will you be able to find your way back, father? Remember: 82, viale Piave.”
He doesn’t even answer. Does she take him for a country peasant? She’d be more likely to get lost in the mountains!
He gets to the end of the road. A large square with heavy traffic. On the other side some gardens; he won’t find what he’s looking for that way. He retreats, making detours along smaller and more promising roads. With his shepherd’s habits he takes in details – shop windows, doorways, signs – to remember the way, because in Milan the sun doesn’t come out to guide anyone. In the end he finds a barber’s in a side-street. Via Rossini; an auspicious name. His tactics have borne fruit.
Auspicious indeed! Quite the contrary. His hackles are raised straight away by the ostentatiousness of the place, and he feels uneasy at the oily talk and the insistence on offering him cosmetics. Even though he turns them all down, when they finish they charge him six thousand lire for a simple shave.
Six thousand lire! And that without the steady hands of Aldu in Roccasera who for a quarter of the price also gives you the alum stone and leaves your face like marble every Wednesday and Saturday!
“Here’s five thousand, and that’s plenty,” he says drily, throwing the note on the counter containing the ointments and lotions. “I’m not waiting for the change so I don’t have to spend a minute longer among thieves. Even Fra Diavola didn’t face anything like this, and he used to risk his life…! Does anyone have a problem with that?”
“Now sir…” starts the owner. But he stops when he sees the old man thrust his hand in his pocket with obvious intent.
“Leave it, boss!” whispers a camp young man in a green overall.
There is a long silence as the old man stands stock-still in the middle of the shop, impervious to the looks which rain down on him from all around. Finally, he very slowly goes out and heads home. On the way he picks up a simple safety razor. Renato has offered him an electric one, but he knows that some people get electrocuted with those in the bathroom. Besides, his razor doesn’t make a noise and he wants to shave every day without waking anyone up.
What a failure the barber’s was! Of course, the day started badly. Alone with Renato having breakfast, while Andrea was having a shower, he asked him why the child didn’t sleep with them, as children always have. Renato smiled condescendingly:
“People start to teach them earlier now. They have to sleep alone as soon as they reach this age, father. So they don’t develop a complex.”
“A complex? And what’s that? Something they catch from grown ups?”
Renato piously remains serious and explains in simple words which are easy to understand for a country peasant. In short, it’s important to avoid a child’s over-dependence on its parents. The old man stares at him:
“So who are they going to depend on? He can’t even walk or talk – he can’t stand up for himself!”
“On the parents, obviously – but not too much… Come on, father, don’t worry; the child is cared for as he should be – Andrea and I have studied it carefully”
“Right… in that book, of course.”
“Of course. And, most of all, guided by the doctor. That’s how it is, father; you shouldn’t engender too much affection at that age.”
The old man is silent. Affection in half measures? What affection is that? Controlled, keeping yourself back…? He doesn’t erupt because, after all, they are the parents. But that’s how the day started badly, he felt angry all morning and, of course, he took it out on the thieving barber’s shop.
Fortunately, another establishment reconciles him with the neighbourhood. It is in the via Salvini, another little road where, as he passes, he is drawn to a modest grocer’s shop front. He has also just seen a woman go in who looks like she knows how to shop. Everything points to a shop as a shop should be.
Indeed, as soon as he goes in he is enveloped by smells from the country: strong cheeses, olives in ceramic dishes, herbs and spices, loose fruit, without transparent labelled packaging or moulded cardboard to make up weight… And, if that wasn’t enough, what a woman behind the counter, what a woman!
About forty; a good age. Fresh like her apples. She excuses herself with the recently arrived customer, who she obviously knows, and smiles at the new customer even more with her lively eyes than with her greedy mouth.
“What would you like, sir?”
And the voice. A real stacca, a proper thoroughbred.
“Like? Everything!” he smiles in turn, pointing around him.
Because the shop is a treasure trove: It has just what he is looking for and much more that he has never seen in other shop windows. They even have proper bread: round loaves, sticks, rolls, and even the special bread to fill with the dripping tomato and onion sauce which oozes out when you bite into it. As the Catanzaro saying goes: “With morzeddhu* you eat, drink and wash your face.”
The lady comes out from behind the counter to attend to him. Good thighs, without fat. Fashionable calves, but thin ankles. And that exciting accent, which impels him to ask:
“You’re from the south, aren’t you madam?”
“Like you. And from Tarento.”
“Well, I’m from near Catanzaro. Roccasera, in the mountains.”
“Same thing!” she laughs. “Apulia and Calabria, eh? Like this!”
She expressively joins together the index finger from both hands, while giving him a wink. That gesture joining two regions together also seems to link them both in an equivocal complicity.
The old man chooses provisions calmly, and discusses quality and prices. She attends to him, following his jokes but without getting too familiar with him, and looks at him intrigued until she can’t contain herself any longer:
“How is it that you are doing the shopping? Do you live alone?”
“No, I live with my grandson…! Well, and his parents!”
He added the second sentence quickly, and now thinks about those five words – “I live with my grandson” – which he has never uttered before. “That’s right,” he thinks in surprise. “He’s my grandson. I’m his nonnu.”
“He must be a very handsome little boy,” she says in admiration, looking at him, weighing him up.
“Handsome? Is Brunettino handsome…?” the old man wonders. “That’s something women worry about! Brunettino is something else. Brunettino is… the boy. And that’s it.”
“Well…” he says evasively, while he thinks “this woman knows how to sell. If I’m not careful she’ll get me to buy me anything, but I won’t make it easy for her. Nobody cons me… Well, that’s her thing; she lives off people.”
She reminds him of Beppo’s wife, in the café, serving drinks, always the picture of health with her nice round belly. “You sell with your wife’s tits,” people who know him well tell her husband, and he pretends to get angry to play along, because his Giulietta is very respectable and everyone knows it: it’s said without offence. Besides, it’s true; the man has been fortunate in that as others are in different ways. But this woman in the shop is more refined. Yes, refined, look at the hands wrapping the parcel and giving the change!
“Is she so respectable?” wonders the old man, who is always a good judge. “Here in the city it’s a different life…” But another obsessive question blooms in his mind, and he suddenly asks:
“Excuse my question, madam, but it’s because of my grandson: how old were your children when they stopped sleeping in your room?”
“Oh, we haven’t had any children…! God didn’t send us any.”
“What could God be thinking having this woman to hand?” the old man ponders while he apologises, confused. She waves his apology away, understanding… And, to break the silence, she changes the subject:
“I’m sorry not to be able to send your parcel home for you. We have a boy for that, but he’s ill today. And my husband has gone out to get some more stock.”
A considerate woman: she knows that it’s not right for a man to be carrying parcels along the street. The old man says goodbye:
“Goodbye Mrs…, Mrs…”
“Maddalena, at your service. But not goodbye! A rivederci! Because you will be back, won’t you? We have everything here.”
“Who wouldn’t come back to see you? Of course, a riverderci.”
Out on the street, the smile still remains on the old man’s face. “But how could that woman not have had children, with those thighs and being from the south…? Anyway, it’s none of my business and it’s a pleasure to deal with her. Besides, the shop is my solution. It has everything, and at decent prices. From now on, I will always start the day as God intended.”
He has had it planned since Andrea took his breakfast goat’s cheese and onion out of his wardrobe – “Jesus, father, the room stinks,” she exclaimed – with the intention of hiding them away in those little boxes like fridge coffins. He’ll hide his provisions deep inside the sofa-bed, within its complex iron armour, in plastic bags to contain the smell, which his cigarettes will also help to hide, as Andrea has resigned herself to his smoking where the child doesn’t go. Fortunately, his daughter-in-law and her maid have a useless sense of smell. It’s understandable: Milanese life kills the senses.
So, from now on, he will have breakfast like a proper man, with real smells and tastes, cut with his knife over proper bread and washed down with the good throat-warming red wine that Andrea has not found a reason to throw out of the kitchen.
“At least in the morning I’ll escape the panetto, her ready-made pasta meals, her frozen food and all of that factory-made rubbish… You and I, Rusca, will eat what’s good from the land, even if it’s only once a day!”
He sits on a bench in the big square and starts to roll a cigarette to smoke outside. An occasional passer-by looks at him curiously. As he is about to pass his tongue over the sticky edge of the paper, a thought stops him with his hand in mid-air:
“You know, it could be that Andrea is right about this and that the smoke is not good for the boy…! What do you think, Rusca? The thing is, it calms you down, but the doctor says it is not good for me. And now, as well as Cantanotte, I need to last for Brunettino… Face it, Rusca, the smoke is not good for him, even if we are only smoking in my room.”
He wets the paper, sticks the cigarette and lights it with a match. He inhales parsimoniously, but it doesn’t taste the same as usual. He feels guilty smoking: it’s a betrayal of Brunettino.
It’s a sacrifice suppressing the tobacco, but on the other hand his clandestine breakfasts are a joy, particularly the one three days later, when he is not supposed to be eating anything. They’re going to take blood at nine for the tests ordered by the famous doctor, whose surgery Andrea took him to the day before. Ordered, actually, by that assistant or whatever she was – as fat as Andrea is thin, but sounding the same – since, after much organised reception, waiting, corridors and other preliminaries, they didn’t actually get through to the doctor’s sanctuary. The old man laughs, thinking how Andrea is going to react when she gets up and goes into the kitchen to see how calmly he abstains from eating anything.
“That fasting before tests,” he thinks while he savours his ricotta with onion and olives, “is just doctors’ nonsense. Pure theatre to charge more money. Tests – what for? Whatever happens it will turn out badly, won’t it Rusca? You’ll take care of that!”
The blood is not being taken in the famous doctor’s surgery, but in the Main Hospital. Renato takes him in his car; he has time and it’s on his way to the factory, in the industrial area of Bovisa. He parks, they go in and he guides him through the corridors and the office windows of the hospital bureaucracy to the waiting room itself, where he repeats his instructions again:
“OK, father, so when you come out, get a taxi right to the front door to get home.”
The father listens attentively, but his smile becomes disdainful when Renato leaves. “I would have liked to have seen these youngsters of today in the war, fleeing the Germans through an unknown city… Take a taxi; of course, that’s what I’ll do – at least ten thousand lire!”
Maddalena explained to him the day before – that woman sorts everything out – that the 51 bus goes past the hospital and stops in the piazzale Biancamano, from where he can walk along the via Moscova and through the gardens right to his front door. That’s why he turns a deaf ear to Renato and why another patient of the same age as him looks at him complicitly.
If it was up to him, the old man would leave without having a needle in him, but the famous doctor will demand the results in order to follow protocol. “Protocol and performance, it makes me sick…Do they think I’m some poor old innocent? Do they think I have come to be cured? Fools! If it wasn’t for the fact that that bastard Cantanotte is still breathing, damn it, you wouldn’t get me to leave the village, where I could go happily in my own bed, among friends and with a view of my mountain, la Femminamorta, tranquil beneath the sun and the clouds.”
Because Cantanotte is still breathing, although he can’t stand up, paralysed from the waist down. But he continues to wheeze away, with those fascist black glasses he has worn all his life. The old man had to face that vision the day he left, because the little bastard had got his two sons to take him down to the square in an armchair at daybreak. There he joined a group of his disciples, who chatted to him in the doorway of the Casino while they waited for the moment to come when they could enjoy the great show.
The great show, the old man’s farewell, which he relives now while he waits for the nurse to call him. The square, like in a yellowish old photograph, and in its centre, Renato’s car surrounded by little children. Its uneven floor is enclosed by an irregular quadrilateral of house fronts whose doors and windows, still apparently closed, are implacable observatories for local life and on that day await the final exit of the old man Salvatore. Scowling at each other across the square, as always, are the two longer sides of the rectangle: one with the church and the Casino, watched over by Cantanotte, and the other with Beppo’s café and the Town Hall, domain of the old man and his comrades, with Salvatore’s own home, inherited from his father-in-law, next to the café.
The morning light was getting stronger as the old man tried to gain time, with the crazy hope that his enemy’s paralysis would ascend suddenly like the bubbles in a soft drink, until it drowned his detested heart; but it was in vain that he touched his pouch with the amulets over his shirt, asking for that miracle. The old man had already picked up his blanket and his knife, and he was arguing with his son over whether he should also take the lupara, the old shotgun which was his first firearm, his investiture as a man. Renato was getting impatient, remembering the errand Andrea had given him in Rome which would delay them. When the sun was about to come up he couldn’t wait any longer:
“Father, wouldn’t it be better if I take the car round to the back door and we get out of here?”
The shameful suggestion decided the old man, who shot his son a look that stopped him in his tracks. He left the lupara, kissed Rosetta, waved vaguely at his son-in-law and roared decisively:
“We’re going, but through the front door with our heads held high! And you, Rosetta, if you cry on the balcony I’ll come back up and give you a proper hiding. If you can’t control yourself don’t come out.” The old man went down the stairs again, making his footsteps sound masterful, and emerged, standing taller than ever, from the shadows of the hallway. His friends approached from the café, behaving like the men they were: full of smiles and plans for when Salvatore returned cured. Renato got behind the wheel, waiting impatiently.
Finally the old man broke away from his people and made his way towards the car on his own, which took him nearer to the Casino. He advanced without taking his eyes off his seated enemy, the two sons next to the chair, and the sober group of sidekicks.
“Goodbye Salvatore!” the shell of a mouth under the black glasses fired sarcastically.
The old man stood stock still on the ground, rock steady, with his legs slightly apart, arms at the ready.
“Can you still speak, Domenico?” he replied firmly. “It’s a long time since I heard a peep out of you.”
“There we are. Those of us who are still living still have words.”
“Well then you must have been dead when I cut the tail off your dog Nostero, because you didn’t utter a sound!”
“I did my speaking before, when I killed your Rusca. A fine rabbit hunter indeed!” replied the invalid, making his followers laugh.
“And you must have been dead when I deflowered your niece Concetta! Dead and rotting, like now!” spat the old man furiously, now gripping the knife in his pocket. At that moment he wanted to end to it all: to die, taking the other man with him first.
The sudden silence which befell the square could have been cut with a knife. But Cantanotte had put his hands on his sons’ twitching forearms in time. And he ended by saying, with a contemptuous gesture with his fat, ringed hand:
“Time healed her honour… which is more than the doctors will be able to do for you… Go on now, have a good trip!
There was no more.
“It’s all been said,” thought the old man in a flash. “We all know everything here. That Concetta married a black-marketeer from the war for money and is now a big shot in Catanzaro. That my journey ends in the cemetery and his will do the same before long. That I still have time to plunge my knife into him and feel him die beneath me while his sons stab me…What for? It’s all been said.”
Anyway, the passivity of the other side when faced with his challenge gave him the right to get into the car slowly and with dignity. His son drove off sending a cloud of dust in the direction of Cantanotte and his people.
“Well done Renato,” the old man congratulated his son, satisfied. “And I like the fact you were getting out just in case, but I could handle that lowlife myself.”
However, something was not right, and was making him sad: the inexplicable absence of Ambrosio among those who said goodbye to him. Nobody could tell him the whereabouts of his brotherly comrade who picked him out of the waters of the Crati, where he was bleeding out, during the raid on the Germans in Monte Casiglio.
But Ambrosio was at his post – why wouldn’t he be? On the first bend as they went down the mountain, next to the elm tree by the hermitage, waiting with his evergreen sprig in his mouth. The old man made Renato stop and got out, exclaiming joyfully:
“Brother…! Look at you, Ambrosio…! Have you come like all the others to ask me why I’m going?”
“Since when have I been stupid?” replied Ambrosio, feigning indignation. “It’s obvious! You don’t want Cantanotte to go to your funeral, if you are that unfortunate!” he added, making the superstitious gesture they both shared to ward off evil with his left hand.
They burst out laughing.
“Now,” Ambrosio added seriously, “you have to hold on to give yourself the pleasure of being with him at his. And then, I’ll even invite you to mine!”
He pulled his usual clown face – the tic he was famous for in the middle of combat – and he finished:
“Hold on like you did then, Bruno; you know.”
“I’ll do my best,” the old man promised. “Like then.”
On a sudden impulse they embraced, they embraced, they embraced. Each one putting themselves on the chest of the other until their hearts were kissing. They each could feel the other one’s beating, they let go and, without saying anything else, the old man got into the car. The two looks still embraced, through the window, as Renato started the car.
Ambrosio raised his fist and started to sing for the old man the vibrant partisans’ march, as he became an ever-smaller figure behind them.
When a bend in the road came between them, the words of struggle and hope were still ringing in the old man’s chest.
It’s snowing!
The old man jumps out of bed, excited like a child: in his country snow is wonder and play, a promise of rich grazing and fat livestock. When he sees the flakes he puts his head out of the window, but on the patio floor there is no white. The city corrupts it, like everything else, turning it into muddy pools. He considers not going out, but changes his mind: maybe in the gardens the snow will have lain. Besides, that way he escapes Anunziata, who’s coming early today because Andrea has classes.
It’s not that he gets on badly with her; it’s that she’s a cleaning maniac and her invasion of successive rooms reminds him of the Germans: she even pushes her vacuum cleaner in front of her like a tank! The old man retreats from room to room, taking his secret provisions from their hiding place under the sofa-bed, while his room is cleaned. Even worse, she doesn’t leave things as they were, but arranges them how she likes them. At least she doesn’t talk much; she prefers to listen to the radio that she takes everywhere.
“And the amount of rubbish that comes out of that machine!” thinks the old man while he watches the snow falling through the nursery window with the boy asleep. “Fortunately it is barely understandable with the government-speak it uses. Of course, it’s the same on the television back in Beppo’s café, but with the screen it doesn’t matter because you can understand things when you see the explainers.”
The worst thing about Anunziata, though, is her underhand surveillance to keep the old man away from his grandson. He suspects warnings from Andrea about possible contagion from a sick man who is also a smoker. “But I’m smoking less all the time!” he thinks indignantly. “It’s fine not to wake a sleeping child, but now that he’s starting to move and wave his hands around opening those little fox’s eyes…”
“Don’t pick him up, Mr Roncone!” warns Anunziata, suddenly appearing in the doorway. “His mother doesn’t like it.”
“Why? Old age isn’t contagious!”
“Sir – the things you say! It’s that children shouldn’t be held. They get used to it, you see. The book says so.”
“So what are they supposed to get used to? Nobody touching them? Books! You know where I’d like to put them? Yes, madam, right there…! Books! Even baby goats, who go to the teat on their own as soon as they are born, get licked all day by their mothers, and they’re animals!”
“I’m just saying what I’ve been told,” says the woman as she leaves with great dignity.
The boy snuggles up in those arms and, laughing, tries to cling on to the grey curls of hair. The old man hugs that life force with its heartbeat bursting to get out.
At first he was worried about deforming those little limbs; now he knows the child is not so soft. Tiny, yes; needy as well; but demanding, imperious. The energy when he suddenly starts shouting so shrilly, and violently kicks and throws his arms around! That sheer force of will, that dark determination, that condensation of life, is surprising.
This is how the old man, as a little shepherd boy, used to hold his Lambrino; but the behaviour of that favourite little lamb was never unpredictable. The boy, on the other hand, surprises at every moment; he is a perpetual mystery. Why does he reject one day what he wanted the day before? Why is he interested now in what he dismissed before? He investigates and pokes his nose into everything: he touches it, he turns the object round in his little hands, he puts it in his mouth, he tries out its resistance, he smells…he sniffs, especially, like a little dog, and with such intense delight!
The boy is always searching. Then, if he doesn’t feel he is being sought himself, he will think that the world is not working and is rejecting him. That is why the old man embraces him tenderly, kisses him, smells him with the same animal greediness that the boy himself sniffs, thus identifying with him. “Fancy needing books to look after him…! We don’t learn to live like that, but with hands and kisses, with flesh and shouts…! And touching, touching…! Look, my child, I used to hug the Lambrino the same way my mother cuddled me. I learned to hit by being hit – and did I get hit…!” He smiles, remembering another apprenticeship: “And then I caressed as I was caressed, and I had good teachers! You’ll end up caressing as well, I’ll take care of that.”
The little hand that is poking around in his hair hurts him with a sudden willful tug and the old man laughs with glee:
“That’s it – you see how you learn? Like that, with hits and caresses… That’s what we men are like: hard and loving… You know what Torlonio used to keep saying? This: the best life, Bruno, is one at the end of a woman’s knife.”
He notices a sudden tension in the little body – “this boy understands!”- which communicates itself to him and makes him shudder. He is not able to think it, much less to express it, but he is able to feel deeply that boundless moment between their flesh, that mysterious exchange in which he receives a reborn heartbeat from the green shoot in his arms, while the safety of the old trunk well rooted in the eternal earth is infused in the boy.
